In the second season of “Creature Commandos”, there’s going to be a significant shift. During a Q&A session on his Twitter account, DC Studios co-head James Gunn announced that in contrast to the first season where he was solely responsible for writing and producing, the second season will have a dedicated team of writers (a writers’ room). So, instead of Gunn himself penning the episodes, there will be a collaborative effort among several writers for the show’s upcoming season.
Joss Whedon doesn’t delve into the details regarding his decision not to pen Creature Commandos Season 2, but it’s reasonable to assume that his packed schedule might be a factor. Following all, he has just completed three years of work on Superman and the second season of Peacemaker. These are projects where he served both as writer and director. Moreover, he played a significant role in establishing the DC Universe alongside Peter Safran. Considering his expanding list of duties, it’s not surprising that setting up a writers’ room for Creature Commandos Season 2 is a challenge.
James Gunn Steps Back From Creature Commandos Season 2
According to showrunner Dean Lorey, a second season of Creature Commandos was expedited as early as February. He mentioned that they were attempting to outline the season’s plot earlier in the year. At this point, it’s uncertain how far into production they are, but it appears they’re actively working on continuing the narrative from Gunn’s work in the first season.
In December of 2024, “Creature Commandos” marked the debut of the fresh DC Universe, launching as its inaugural project. This animated series centers around Task Force M, a squad led by Amanda Waller comprised of imprisoned, black ops monsters. The roster includes Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Sean Gunn portraying both Weasel and G.I. Robot, and Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky. Additional voice talent in the series includes Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., David Harbour as Frankenstein, Steve Agee as John Economos, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
You can currently watch all episodes of the first season of “Creature Commandos” on HBO Max. At this time, no release date has been given for the second season.
In the near future, following the first season, Gunn will be involved in the second season of the show Peacemaker. It’s anticipated that this upcoming season will have a significant impact on the DC Universe. Interestingly, Gunn has written the entire script for season 2 and has also taken on the director’s role for various episodes. The premiere of Peacemaker Season 2 is scheduled on HBO Max on August 21, 2025.
