Criminal Minds’ 6 Saddest Deaths, Ranked

Criminal Minds centers around the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit and their work to create profiles and catch serial killers. Each episode features the BAU team investigating and apprehending dangerous criminals. Throughout the show’s run – 15 original seasons, three seasons of Criminal Minds: Evolution, and with a fourth season coming – many characters have died, which is always a tragic loss.

Even though many deaths occur on Criminal Minds, some stick with viewers more than others, and are particularly upsetting—though not always because of the victim themselves. We tend to feel sadder about deaths when we’ve seen the character often, or when the details of the episode are especially impactful. Strong writing can also make a death feel more significant, even for characters who only appear in one episode.

Stephen Shepherd’s Almost Return to His Parents

“Mosley Lane” is a disturbing story about a couple who abduct children and hold them captive, attempting to create a family through horrific means. The wife cruelly kills any child who doesn’t obey, and secretly disposes of the bodies in a crematorium on their property. When a new child is taken, another captive named Stephen Shepard attempts to shield her from harm.

Stephen’s bravery ultimately costs him his life, as he tragically dies in a fire. In the final scenes of the “Mosley Lane” episode, the FBI finds the couple holding the children captive and saves those who survived. When the team shares the news with the families of the missing children, Stephen’s parents receive the devastating news. This scene is especially heartbreaking and stays with viewers, as his father is overcome with grief upon learning their son was alive just the day before, and still resonates with fans of Criminal Minds.

Sarah Jean’s Deserved Better

In the Criminal Minds episode “Riding The Lightning,” Sarah Jean is a death-row inmate and the wife of another prisoner. Her husband was a serial killer responsible for the deaths of at least twelve girls, and she was convicted of killing her son, Riley. Fellow inmates consider Sarah Jean a frightening and influential figure. However, Gideon discovers that Sarah Jean didn’t actually kill her son; she gave him up for adoption to protect him.

Gideon discovers Riley is still alive, but surprisingly, Sarah Jean asks him to let her die. She believes Riley’s return could bring too much pain and wants Gideon to escape the shadow of his family’s past and find happiness. Her calm acceptance of her fate, established early in the series, shocked viewers, hinting at the show’s increasingly complex and somber tone. The fact that Gideon is the last person she sees makes her death even more heartbreaking.

Will LaMontagne Jr.’s Death Is the Heartbreaking Goodbye of a Long-Time Cast Member

The latest season of Criminal Minds: Evolution (Season 18 overall) shocked fans, especially with the limited role of Will after the first season. Many viewers were upset to see him largely absent, considering his established and beloved connection with JJ.

During the first season of Evolution, Will received a frightening cancer diagnosis, but thankfully it turned out to be a false alarm. However, in Season 3, his health took a tragic turn when he unexpectedly collapsed due to a thyroid aneurysm. Sadly, doctors couldn’t save him. His death was a shock, and the show dedicated a considerable amount of time to honoring his memory. It’s disappointing that Will and JJ weren’t able to have a lasting relationship, especially considering the show often features dramatic deaths. This death, being so realistic and unexpected, was particularly difficult for viewers.

Maeve Donovan’s Death Was Incredibly Hard on Reid

In a first for the series, Criminal Minds introduces a significant romantic connection for Spencer Reid. He develops feelings for Maeve Donovan, though they only communicate by phone, as Maeve fears her stalker might go after Reid if they met. Despite the distance, they enjoy a close, mostly platonic relationship, bonding over discussions of science, books, and philosophy during Season 8. The season later reveals that Maeve’s stalker is Diane Turner.

Diane resents Maeve for the criticism of her doctoral thesis during their time at Mendel University and feels envious of Maeve’s life. Driven by this, Diane tries to sabotage Maeve’s relationship with Reid. When her attempts fail, she tragically takes her own life, also causing Maeve’s death in a final act of spite. Viewers are deeply saddened by Maeve’s death, feeling Reid deserved a chance at happiness with the woman he loved, not to lose her so soon after they met.

Jason Gideon Never Returned Alive to the Series

Although he was one of the first members of the BAU, Gideon is deeply troubled by past mistakes in his career. His sudden exit is particularly difficult for Spencer Reid, who greatly admired and learned from Gideon as a mentor. Gideon leaves without a proper goodbye, only a letter for Reid to find.

The tenth season episode, “Nelson’s Sparrow,” centers around the BAU investigating the death of Gideon. The team revisits a decades-old FBI case while Rossi reflects on his history with Gideon. Gideon’s death was handled carefully due to the actor’s unavailability, but fans were deeply saddened by the news. The episode is particularly difficult for Reid, who is once again grieving the loss of a father figure, this time permanently.

Haley Brooks’ Murder Changed Hotch’s Life Forever

Haley Brooks’s death in Season 5’s “100” episode was a pivotal moment in the series, marking the first time a family member of a BAU team member was killed. The perpetrator, Foyet, specifically targeted Hotch by going after his ex-wife, Haley, and their son, who were in protective hiding. He gained access to Haley by disguising himself as a U.S. Marshal and tricked her into meeting him at home, falsely claiming Hotch had been killed to lure her into contact.

As a fan, I still remember being completely shocked when Haley realized what was happening – it was too late to save herself, and she just frantically told her son to hide. It was heartbreaking watching the BAU try, and then even worse when we heard she was gone while Hotch was still on the phone. Seeing Hotch react to her body, and then finding their son pretending to ‘work the case’ while clearly terrified… it was devastating. Haley’s death really stuck with me, and it definitely changed Hotch forever. It was such a powerful and sad moment in the show.
