Unfortunately, you can no longer watch the 1997 animated series Extreme Ghostbusters on The Roku Channel. This show, which continued the story from The Real Ghostbusters, had been available for about a year, debuting around Halloween, but Ghostbusters News reports it’s now been removed from the platform.
The animated series Extreme Ghostbusters features voice actors you’ll recognize – Billy West from Futurama, Maurice LaMarche of Pinky and the Brain, and even Alfonso Ribeiro, known for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The show is set years after the original Ghostbusters cartoon, but things have changed: there aren’t many ghosts around anymore, so ghostbusting isn’t a practical business. Here’s what the story is about:
After the team disbanded, everyone went their own way, but Egon Spengler remained at the firehouse. He continued to watch over the ghost-trapping equipment, look after Slimer, pursue his studies, and even teach a college course about the paranormal.
With ghosts returning, Egon needs a new team of Ghostbusters. He recruits four students: Kylie Griffin, a brilliant and somewhat gloomy expert in the supernatural; Eduardo Rivera, a laid-back and skeptical student; Garrett Miller, a talented athlete who uses a wheelchair; and Roland Jackson, a hardworking and mechanically-minded student.
Dan Aykroyd Teases the Future of ‘Ghostbusters’ Franchise

Columbia Pictures
The future of Ghostbusters is up in the air, according to creator Dan Aykroyd. In a recent podcast interview with Aaron Sagers, Aykroyd hinted at potential new directions for the franchise, playfully suggesting they might even use “pink slime.” He confirmed another Ghostbusters movie is planned, but they’re still deciding how to approach it.
Considering all the talented people working today, it’s hard to ignore the darker side of human behavior and how it might show up in their work. It could even take the form of something truly disturbing. I’m particularly curious to see what Jason Reitman and the team at Ghost Corps in Los Angeles come up with.
Dan Aykroyd, best known for playing Dr. Ray Stantz in the Ghostbusters films, recently announced a new animated Ghostbusters TV show is in the works. He described it as exciting, with a fresh take on the characters and the city of Manhattan. Aykroyd hopes the show will offer a chance to explore and resolve some lingering issues from the franchise’s history. Details about where the show will air haven’t been released yet.

Look, let’s be honest, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire didn’t exactly set the box office or critical world on fire this year. But Ernie Hudson, who plays Winston Zeddemore, seems really eager to shake things up if they decide to make another film. He recently told Screen Rant that he wants to get much more involved and really dig deep into the character and the story for any future installments.
It’s great that the studio is prioritizing family-friendly content. However, I’d also enjoy seeing Winston lead a new team and explore different kinds of stories. It would be really exciting! They mention his potential retirement, but I don’t want him reduced to just an office-bound figure. I’d love to see him be more actively involved, like he was in the earlier films, really getting his hands dirty and taking charge.
