The romantic comedy Jane Austen Wrecked My Life, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024, is now gaining popularity worldwide on streaming services. While it received positive reviews after its theatrical release in France and the U.S. in 2025, it didn’t initially reach a large audience.
Directed and written by Laura Piani, Jane Austen Wrecked My Life stars Camille Rutherford, Pablo Pauly, and Charlie Anson. The film centers on Agathe, a shy writer and bookstore owner from Paris, who unexpectedly finds herself at a Jane Austen writing retreat in England. Her best friend secretly entered the first few chapters of a novel she hasn’t planned to finish, launching Agathe on an unexpected journey. The movie has received positive reviews, currently holding an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to FlixPatrol, the movie Jane Austen Wrecked My Life is currently the 7th most popular film on HBO Max. It’s even outranking three Harry Potter movies! The top five spots are held by another Harry Potter film, the How to Train Your Dragon series, Split starring Anya Taylor-Joy, and One Battle After Another, which won Best Picture at the Critics’ Choice Awards.
Despite gaining traction on HBO Max, the romantic comedy Jane Austen Wrecked My Life is currently available on Netflix in the U.S. While The Great Flood and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery remain popular on the streaming service, Jane Austen Wrecked My Life has the potential to become a hit with American audiences as more people discover it.
As a big fan of romance and period dramas, I’ve noticed Netflix is grouping Jane Austen Wrecked My Life with other thoughtful, bookish love stories like Persuasion, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and even Blue Is the Warmest Color. I actually had the chance to review it for ScreenRant and gave it an 8/10 – it’s definitely something different! It’s not your typical rom-com, and it’s way more than just a cute ‘cottagcore’ aesthetic; it really stands out.
I’ve been following Piani’s work for a while now – I really enjoyed her episodes of Spiral and Plan B. I’m excited to hear she’s adapting Leïla Slimani’s The Country of Others into a new series! And I was really impressed with Camille Rutherford in Blue Is the Warmest Color, and of course, she was fantastic in Anatomy of a Fall, which was nominated for Best Picture this year.
Now that the major award-winning films of the year are becoming available on streaming and digital platforms, it’s a great time to discover some lesser-known titles. Looking ahead to 2025, viewers are on the hunt for hidden gems, and streaming data shows many have already found Jane Austen Wrecked My Life.
