You’ve been a dedicated follower of Crimson Desert for years, watching every trailer and gameplay reveal closely. With the launch just a month away, you’re eager for more information – maybe even a chance to try the game yourself. It’s natural to wonder why Gamescom attendees got early access two years running, and if another opportunity might arise.
It’s not as straightforward as people might hope. Will Powers, Pearl Abyss America’s marketing director, explained on the Dropped Frames podcast that while they understand the request for a public demo, it won’t be happening. He says the game is simply difficult to showcase effectively in a demo format.
Almost no one has played the game without a Pearl Abyss staff member nearby. The demos we’ve released aren’t fully independent; they’re essentially saved progress from specific points in the game, like boss battles. This means they don’t accurately reflect the complete gameplay experience.
Showing a boss fight doesn’t really highlight what our game is about, which is exploring a truly open world. We get why people want to see that kind of content, and we’re not dismissing that request, but it doesn’t showcase the core experience.
We’re planning to give key influencers and reviewers early access to the game so they can experience it before it launches. We’ll also be sharing performance data. We hope this addresses your concerns and gives you a good understanding of what to expect from the game.
It’s understandable why Powers is finding it hard to showcase the game fully. It’s a massive world, even bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2, and the main story is just a small part of everything you can do. He can’t even estimate how long it will take to play through everything, making it nearly impossible to fit the game’s scope into one demo.
It’s hard to even begin thinking about how much work it would take to build a playable demo that truly shows what the game will be like.
Crimson Desert is set to release on March 19th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. It’s already highly anticipated, with over two million players adding it to their wishlists as of February 3rd. Good news for players: while pre-ordering gets you some exclusive armor, the game won’t include a store where you can buy extra items with real money.
