Artificial intelligence is now widespread, particularly in video game creation. Even popular games, such as ARC Raiders by Embark Studios, utilize AI for voice work, and industry leaders like Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, believe it’s a trend that can’t be dismissed. Therefore, when a large-scale game emphasizes the importance of human voice actors, it’s a welcome sign.
During an appearance on the Dropped Frames podcast, Will Powers from Pearl Abyss America clarified the voice acting situation for Crimson Desert. After a moment of consideration, he stated they avoid making broad claims about other games. Powers confirmed that all voice acting in their game is performed by real people. While he stopped short of guaranteeing every single NPC is voice-acted, he emphasized that all major NPCs – those involved in the main story and side quests – are fully voiced. He explained this cautious approach is to avoid any potential inaccuracies online.
The dedication to quality extends beyond the English voice acting to include extensive localization efforts. According to Powers, the game features voice acting in multiple languages – including Korean, English, and Chinese – and has been fully localized into text in 13 or even more languages, as you can see on their Steam page. Given the game’s massive scale – its world map is larger than that of Red Dead Redemption 2, and the campaign represents only a small part of the total content – this level of polish understandably requires a significant amount of time.
Okay, so localizing this game for a ton of different languages is a massive job, seriously. I see all the requests from communities asking for their language to be added, and I want you to know I’m not blowing you off! It’s just not something I can decide on my own. It takes a really long time and a ton of work, and honestly, we’d rather get the game into everyone’s hands now and then look at more languages later, rather than keep delaying the release.
Crimson Desert will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC starting March 19th. Good news for players: the game won’t include any in-game purchases for cosmetic items or other microtransactions. However, there won’t be a free demo before launch, as the developers want players to experience the full game as intended.
