Don’t underestimate how much a good update can help a game, especially a large one like the recent patch for Pearl Abyss’s Crimson Desert. The update was so effective that the open-world adventure game hit a new peak of 276,261 concurrent players on Steam yesterday.
The game’s current player numbers are a significant improvement over its initial launch, which had 239,045 concurrent players. This is especially notable because these current numbers are from over ten days after release. Typically, player counts would level off or stop declining around this point, particularly given the number of problems the game had when it first launched – issues that led to a mixed reception.
The game has seen significant improvements recently. Last week’s update added new storage options and locations, and began to fix control problems. The newest update went even further, introducing five permanent mounts, helpful features like instant cooking and improved sprinting, and also removed some mistakenly added AI-generated content. As a result, player reviews have become overwhelmingly positive, with 81% of over 65,000 reviews now giving the game a thumbs-up, resulting in a “Very Positive” rating.
This isn’t the end of support for the game. Pearl Abyss CEO Heo Jin-young shared that with Crimson Desert approaching five million copies sold, the team is still focused on improving the game and isn’t ready to announce plans for downloadable content just yet.
We don’t have a firm plan for future downloadable content (DLC) yet, but our goal is to keep players engaged with the game for as long as possible. We’re planning to deliver what players want quickly, while also ensuring the game remains profitable. Our development, management, and sales teams will collaborate to balance player enjoyment with positive results for our investors. Right now, increasing sales of the original game is our main focus, as the CEO explained to shareholders recently.
It’s possible the game could eventually come to platforms like the next Nintendo Switch. While nothing is official yet, Pearl Abyss is currently exploring the possibility.
