If you’re buying a physical copy of the upcoming RPG Crimson Desert, you’ll still need an internet connection to complete the installation.
Okay, so I was getting worried about needing the physical disc all the time, but it looks like this game does need an internet connection to actually play! Even though it’s on Blu-ray, you’ll have to download a pretty big patch on day one before you can jump in. A little annoying, but at least we know now!
It seems the reason for this is quite simple: the full game is not on the disc.
Based on what we’ve seen of the installation process, it looks like around 76GB of data is being transferred. The game’s full size on PC is expected to be approximately 150GB.
Even with file compression, the PS5 version will likely be about the same size as other versions. Pearl Abyss has decided against using two Blu-ray discs for the game.
According to Digital Foundry’s latest report, the initial update for the game will likely be quite large. Currently, the game doesn’t utilize the PlayStation 5 Pro’s advanced PSSR upscaling technology, but it will be enabled when the game officially launches.
Just so you know, after the first update, you’ll be able to play the game without an internet connection – it won’t need to connect to any servers after that.
However, this is disappointing for those who prefer physical media and want to be sure they can always access their entire collection on a disc.
We’re a little reluctant to compare this to the old Game Key Card issue, since you’re essentially getting a complete game with your Blu-ray. However, it doesn’t really matter if the game won’t work unless you download something – the result is the same.
