Despite a lot of excitement before its launch, Crimson Desert has received reviews that average a score of 78 on Metacritic. This appears to have caused Pearl Abyss, the game’s developer, to see its share value drop by nearly 29%. The decrease is likely because investors expected much higher review scores.
Pearl Abyss stock experienced a significant drop in South Korean trading today, falling to ₩46,600 (about $30.66). This represents a decrease of roughly 28.9 percent from yesterday’s price of ₩65,500 (around $43.66), as reported by Insider Gaming.
Reviews for Crimson Desert are all over the place. Metacritic shows some outlets, like MMORPG.com and Vice, giving it very high scores (100 and 90 respectively), while others, including Shacknews, Eurogamer, and TheGamer, weren’t as impressed. We gave it an 8 out of 10, praising its beautiful graphics, many things to do, and focus on letting players explore the world naturally.
Before its launch, Sony and Pearl Abyss demonstrated gameplay of Crimson Desert on a standard PlayStation 5 through two episodes of Sony’s Japanese show, Play! Play! Play!. The videos highlighted features like riding dragons, completing side quests, battling bosses, engaging in combat, and exploring the open game world.
A recent report from Digital Foundry’s John Linneman shared details about the PS5 Pro version of the game. He was impressed with the game’s Performance mode, noting it did a solid job of keeping frame rates steady at 60 FPS. Although frame rates occasionally dipped during large, action-packed battles, he was generally very pleased with the performance.
The PS5 Pro will offer Balanced and Quality graphics modes. Quality mode prioritizes native 4K resolution with a stable 30 frames per second and the highest level of ray tracing detail. Balanced mode renders at 1440p and then upscales it to 4K, aiming for a frame rate of 40-48 FPS (up to 48 FPS if your TV supports VRR), with high-quality ray tracing.
Linneman emphasized that while the game’s visuals are good, his biggest focus was on how much it stressed the computer’s processor. He noted it could be demanding, but the game generally runs well in its three different modes. However, what truly stands out is the game’s massive scale, depth, and the way its open world functions. He also said the high-end PC version translates well to the PS5 Pro and they’re eager to see how it performs on other consoles.
Xbox Series X/S players didn’t get a preview of how Crimson Desert would perform on their consoles from the developers, Pearl Abyss. However, with reviews now available and the game launching soon, we expect to see gameplay footage from those consoles shortly.
Crimson Desert is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
