As a huge fan, I was so excited to see Pearl Abyss finally give us a proper look at Crimson Desert! This first of three deep dives really showed off everything the game has to offer, especially since it’s launching in March. Honestly, seeing the new characters, all the things you can do in the world, and just how massive everything is, really drove home how beautiful this game truly is. I can’t wait for the next reveal!
Even though the game reached ‘gold’ status last week – meaning the core content is complete – the development team is still working hard. According to Will Powers, PR Director at Pearl Abyss America, they’re now focused on refining and optimizing the game for the best possible performance. He told IGN that this optimization phase is just as crucial as the initial development, ensuring a smooth and polished experience for players when the game launches.
So, I heard they’re planning to support the PS5 Pro with Crimson Desert, and they’ll even let us turn down those crazy particle effects if things get too hectic. But honestly, they’re still keeping quiet about what resolution and frame rates we can expect on consoles. Still, the engine they built, BlackSpace, is pretty powerful, and can do some amazing stuff even without needing tricks like DLSS or FSR to boost performance.
We’re aiming to showcase the game in true 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, with ray tracing enabled. This high-quality visual experience is achieved directly within the game engine, not through upscaling technologies like DLSS or FSR. Of course, players will have options to adjust settings and optimize performance further, but we want the game to look and run great even without those tweaks – it should be impressive on its own.
The game isn’t flawless in terms of optimization, but it’s pushing the engine to its absolute limits. It’s as well-optimized as it can be given the technology we’re using. Because of this, it can handle complex visuals – like rendering thousands of trees – more effectively than many standard game engines.
Existing game engines couldn’t achieve the developers’ ambitious goals for this game. Therefore, they built a custom engine to bring their vision to life.
Crimson Desert will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC starting March 19th, more than five years after it was first revealed. The game’s story follows Kliff, who must bring together the scattered members of his mercenary group, the Greymanes, after a conflict with the Black Bears. Adding to the challenge is a powerful, enigmatic force called the Abyss, which different factions are eager to control.
Players can get involved with different groups, freeing areas and attacking forts in large battles, but there’s also a lot to uncover beyond that.
