Through numerous previews, interviews, and an upcoming release date, the anticipation for Bloober Team’s “Cronos: The New Dawn” has been steadily growing. There are still many mysteries to unravel about this time-traveling post-apocalyptic journey, including its various endings. Yet, for survival horror enthusiasts, it’s reassuring to know that the game retains a “linear” feel, even though it offers moments of freedom.
Speaking to MP1st, game director Jacek Zięba described the overall structure as challenging due to its time travel narrative. He explained that while the progression is essentially linear, there are instances where players have some freedom, such as backtracking and resolving issues within a level. However, it’s crucial for the story to maintain a steady pace, as they aim to convey a specific message effectively in this game.
Grzegorz Like, our lead writer/narrative designer, mentioned they considered several versions of various elements but found a more linear approach more suitable for horror narratives. This is because an overly large game can become less effective due to diminishing returns, or in other words, it loses its impact over time. However, they wanted to maintain the illusion of choice and player agency, so they incorporated dialogue options, and these choices affect what the player encounters within the game and which souls they collect.
Playing with new players can significantly alter your perspective on the game. They’ll share unique insights and background information, enriching your understanding of it. After completing one playthrough, discussing it with a friend in a bar might lead to a different conversation about the game, possibly inspiring you to replay it.
Upon returning to the tale, players will discover they can choose New Game Plus, making it possible to increase the game’s challenge level. The specifics of the various difficulty settings have not been disclosed yet, but for those who enjoy completing games thoroughly, this feature adds an exciting twist to subsequent playthroughs.
On September 5th, the new adventure Cronos: The New Dawn is set to release on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
