‘Cross’ Season 2’s Honky-Tonk Shows a Lighter Side of Alex Cross

Before the second season of Cross began, viewers were buzzing about a “honky-tonk” element. It might seem strange for a thriller about a detective and forensic psychologist tracking serial killers, but the anticipation was definitely justified.

This scene stands out because it’s different from the rest of the show. It sets up a key turning point in the story, and more importantly, it reveals a gentler, more lighthearted side of Alex Cross (Aldis Hodge) that viewers haven’t seen before. Let’s dive in…

Alex Cross Gets Playful For Once in ‘Cross’ Season 2 Honky-Tonk Scene

The first season of the Cross TV series offers a lighter side to Alex Cross, similar to Reacher. We see him balancing work with family – his grandmother, children, and Elle (Samantha Walkes). But when he’s on the job, or even just hanging out with friends like John (Isaiah Mustafa), Alex is completely focused on work. He’s reserved, disciplined, and always in control.

The second season of Cross immediately shows us a changed Alex. While he’s still fundamentally the same person, he’s much lighter now. After going to therapy to cope with his wife’s death and letting go of his quest for revenge, he’s finally relieved of a huge burden. This allows him to truly listen to Kayla (Alona Tal) and, for the first time, step back from being a detective. They connect at a bar in Texas while pursuing a case lead, and with nothing pressing to do, they decide to relax and have some fun. However, there’s a slight complication: it’s a country western bar, and Alex admits he doesn’t quite fit the atmosphere.

Despite everything else, the connection between Alex and Kayla is wonderful to watch. Kayla encourages Alex to relax and enjoy himself, and he decides to give in. As he starts drinking, he truly lets loose. It begins with some clumsy line dancing, where Alex is clearly uncomfortable. But soon, he’s taken off his jacket and dancing like a pro, picking up the steps surprisingly quickly for someone who’s had a few drinks and has never line danced before.

The scene quickly becomes lively and fun. Alex fully embraces the atmosphere, sporting a cowboy hat and clearly enjoying himself – you can even see a genuine smile on his face! Though it’s a short scene, lasting around ten minutes, it’s a welcome reminder of Alex’s humanity. He juggles many roles – detective, father, widower, son, friend, and sometimes, boyfriend – but occasionally, he just needs to relax and be himself.

This scene from Season 2 of Cross is enjoyable, but it also marks a turning point in the relationship between Alex, the show’s leading action star, and Kayla. They’ve been friends for years and always maintained a platonic boundary, though there was always a subtle attraction. A video call reveals Kayla’s long-held interest in Alex, and now that he’s available, he’s starting to see her differently. Perhaps he’s finally letting himself acknowledge his existing feelings for her.

After a slow dance and a kiss, they reluctantly part ways for the night, retreating to their separate hotel rooms. However, the night isn’t over. They eventually give in to their feelings and sleep together, a moment that feels like it’s been building for years. This changes their relationship forever. What happens next, both personally and professionally, is uncertain, but they’ll always share the memory of that special night at the honky-tonk.
