It appears that Smilegate Entertainment is eager to broaden the scope of its Crossfire series by delving into new genres. Previously, they ventured into single-player campaigns for multiplayer shooters with CrossfireX and real-time strategy games with Crossfire: Legion. This time, however, the franchise seems set to venture into the horror genre with Crossfire: Rainbow. Here’s a brief trailer showcasing some gameplay.
It’s important to mention that Smilegate hasn’t officially confirmed a Western launch for Crossfire: Rainbow yet. The game appears to be under development for PC, iOS, and Android platforms. As per the YouTube description, it’s being created using Unreal Engine 5. Interestingly, the trailer wasn’t uploaded by Smilegate but by a fan of the Crossfire series. The trailer itself contains text at the bottom indicating it showcases the PC version of the game, and it’s a blend of in-game cinematics and gameplay footage.
The trailer for “Crossfire: Rainbow” showcases the game’s striking, lifelike graphics, aiming to deliver a tense and suspenseful horror shooter experience. The voice acting is in Chinese, but the storyline remains largely unclear from the trailer. However, it appears that supernatural elements are prominent, as the player character encounters a foreboding human-like shadow in a hallway, only to be diverted by a spooky painting falling off the wall.
In terms of gameplay, it appears that Crossfire: Rainbow will draw inspiration from other first-person horror shooters such as Resident Evil: Village, offering players a variety of weapons to combat the seemingly supernatural dangers. However, based on the trailer, we can only anticipate gunplay using an assault rifle at the beginning, with the pistol and shotgun being the main focus for gameplay demonstration so far.
The game appears to feature a crafting system, suggesting that players can fabricate their own items like makeshift suppressors for their pistols. This implies that stealth could be an important strategy during gameplay. Later in the trailer, we see the protagonist creating a Molotov cocktail which is then utilized against a more formidable-looking enemy who may require something stronger than a few pistol or shotgun shots to defeat.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed that the game subtly incorporates a mechanic related to the player character’s mental state. When the lower-left corner of the screen turns nearly fully crimson, eerie auditory and visual hallucinations start creeping in, adding an extra layer of tension and immersion to the gaming experience.
The latest installment in the Crossfire series, Crossfire: Legion, was released as far back as December 2022. Unfortunately, this game didn’t attract a large audience initially, reaching a maximum of around 400 simultaneous players at launch. Recently, Smilegate Entertainment and developer Blackbird Interactive announced that Crossfire: Legion will be removed from Steam on August 18. Along with the announcement, they also mentioned that they would process refunds for players, adhering to Steam’s Refund Policy.
During this period, it might be worthwhile to investigate the details surrounding the discontinuation of CrossfireX, including the cancellation of its campaign, which occurred in 2023.
