January has been a huge month for Crunchyroll, with many popular anime series returning and new shows finally premiering. Titles like Oshi no Ko, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, and Hell’s Paradise are just a few examples. This week, a highly anticipated anime made its comeback, and the surge in viewers reportedly caused Crunchyroll’s servers to temporarily struggle. The return of this popular action anime focuses on a dangerous new game in its third season.
The third season of Jujutsu Kaisen launched on Crunchyroll with two episodes that fans may have already seen in last year’s movie, Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution. Even though some viewers were familiar with the start of the Culling Game arc, the premiere still caused the streaming service to briefly go offline due to high demand. Thankfully, the issue was quickly resolved, demonstrating the immense popularity of Yuji Itadori and the other characters. As of now, Crunchyroll is working normally, so you can start watching Gege Akutami’s anime adaptation without worry.
Why Did The Culling Game Crash The System?

The second season of Jujutsu Kaisen was truly memorable, focusing on the intense Shibuya Incident Arc. The villain Suguru Geto devised a scheme to trap the incredibly powerful teacher, Satoru Gojo, in a special dimension called the “Prison Realm.” With Gojo contained, Shibuya became a battleground for various evil forces eager to exploit his absence. Yuji fought bravely to protect everyone, but sadly, he couldn’t save characters like Nobara and Nanami. To make matters worse, the release of Sukuna led to thousands of deaths throughout the city.
Season three follows Yuji as he’s pursued by both heroes and villains while trying to stop the curses released by Geto. Geto has initiated a large-scale tournament called the “Culling Game,” which has awakened supernatural powers in many new characters, both good and bad. The first two episodes of the season feature a challenging fight for Yuji against Yuta Okkotsu, a character previously featured in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, and he’s clearly outmatched.
Crunchyroll has experienced server crashes before due to overwhelming popularity, and Jujutsu Kaisen isn’t the only anime to cause it. The final episode of Attack on Titan brought the servers down with the massive number of viewers, and even the debut of Solo Leveling caused issues, which was unexpected for a new series. Basically, if an anime can crash Crunchyroll’s servers, it’s a major hit.
