In the 1980s and 90s, a few unique anime series gained popularity in the United States, attracting many new fans. While some shows like Kingdom and Detective Conan are huge hits in Japan, they haven’t reached the same level of success in the West. Early anime broadcasts in North America, particularly on the Sci-Fi Channel, helped series like Demon City Shinjuku and Guyver find an audience. Now, another of these classic titles is making a comeback on Crunchyroll, with its sequel remaining largely unseen for almost thirty years.
The series X began in 1996 as an animated adaptation by Studio Madhouse, based on a story from the creative group CLAMP. It centers around a conflict between two powerful factions with opposing visions for the future – one seeking to safeguard humanity, and the other prioritizing nature, even at the expense of people. Following the initial film, a television series was made, as well as a less well-known prequel, X2 – Double X. Originally released in 1993, Crunchyroll has announced that this short film will be available to stream later today, June 10th. The original creators of the series have also shared their excitement about its return.
X Will Give it to You
In a recent interview, YOSHIKI, the writer behind X, explained how the prequel project began. The short animated film, which is under thirty minutes long, is more like a collection of music videos than a traditional story. YOSHIKI described how the project came about at a time when collaborations between rock bands and anime were rare. He was initially drawn in by the shared name, “X,” and then captivated by CLAMP’s unique and beautiful artwork. He felt a strong connection between their work and his own, and believed it was a groundbreaking idea. While such collaborations are more common now, YOSHIKI knew at the time it was a risky but exciting venture, and his goal was to create a deeply emotional experience for fans of both music and anime.
The writer reflected on how the project compares to today’s anime landscape, which has become incredibly popular globally. He recalled believing the collaboration could be truly unique, noting that at the time, the international growth of anime and manga was hard to predict. Seeing the worldwide success of series like Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer now, he feels proud to have contributed to the early days of that expansion and is thankful to CLAMP for making the project happen.
