Crunchyroll’s Bloodiest Film Hits New Box Office Heights (Even Beating Tom Cruise)

While *Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle* has been a huge success this year, it’s not the only anime film drawing large crowds. Anime is becoming increasingly popular as more titles are released in North America and worldwide. A new film from Crunchyroll is set to premiere in American theaters later this month, and it’s already been a hit in Japan. In fact, this film—which is known for its intense action—has already outperformed Tom Cruise’s latest movie at the Japanese box office, and it could potentially do the same in Western markets.

The movie *Chainsaw Man: The Reze Arc* has remained the number one film in Japan for a month, earning approximately $4.5 million USD over the last weekend. So far, it’s made over $38.5 million USD in Japan. It will be released in North American theaters on October 24th. While it’s not expected to outperform *Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle*, which has been number one for two weeks, *Chainsaw Man The Movie* could still be successful in Western cinemas. In Japan, the film has surpassed *Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning*, which earned $35.5 million USD at the Japanese box office.

Chainsaw Man’s Competition

After four weeks in theaters, *Chainsaw Man The Movie: The Reze Arc* faced tougher competition at the box office. The live-action version of the anime film *5 Centimeters Per Second* landed in second place, while *Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle* remained popular in third, even after being released thirteen weeks ago. *Tron: Ares* didn’t perform as well as hoped, opening at number five. Although *Chainsaw Man* may not surpass *Demon Slayer*, the continued success of both films demonstrates the growing popularity of anime.

As of today, it’s still unclear what’s next for the *Chainsaw Man* anime. While a second season hasn’t been officially announced, MAPPA, the studio behind the show, is also unsure of their plans. According to MAPPA President Manabu Otsuka, they’re evaluating the next part of the story to decide whether to adapt it as a film or another television season, similar to how they handled the character Reze. They haven’t made a decision yet.
