The world of anime offers something for everyone, with countless shows set in imaginative worlds. While there’s a huge variety, the ‘shonen’ genre is particularly popular. ‘Shonen,’ meaning ‘young boy’ in Japanese, typically features stories aimed at younger audiences, often starring male characters with big goals. Though the specific lessons vary, many shonen stories center around the importance of pursuing your dreams. Because of this common formula, hundreds of shonen anime and manga share similar themes and storylines. This can sometimes make it feel like many shonen shows are quite repetitive.
While hugely popular anime like *Demon Slayer* have set new records, they still follow a pretty standard formula, even with unique characters. That’s what makes *Gachiakuta*, Crunchyroll’s new dark anime, so refreshing. From the very beginning, it feels different from typical shonen anime. Adapted from Kei Urana’s work and animated by Bones, *Gachiakuta*, released this summer, stands out with its darker, more realistic style, truly marking it as a next-generation shonen series.
Crunchyroll’s Gachiakuta Breaks the Mold of Shonen Series
Gachiakuta opens with a stark contrast between the wealthy, who live comfortably above ground, and the impoverished, who are forced to live in slums. The upper class also acts as the justice system, punishing criminals by throwing them off the edge of the world into a seemingly bottomless abyss. The story follows Rudo, a young boy wrongly accused of his father’s murder, who endures this punishment only to discover a hidden society thriving beneath the surface. After seeing how these people live, Rudo adjusts to their difficult world and vows to get revenge on those who falsely accused him, ultimately aiming to overthrow the powerful elite of the upper world.
Unlike many heroes in action-packed stories who aim to save the world, Rudo is motivated by a personal quest for revenge, immediately setting him apart. As the story unfolds, *Gachiakuta* introduces even more unique aspects, particularly with its interesting magic system. This system allows people to harness power from everyday objects – even things others would throw away.
Rudo sees potential in everything others throw away, and this unique perspective translates into his fighting style. He can use found objects to create new abilities and transform during battles, keeping things unpredictable. But beyond his impressive powers, Rudo is defined by his strong moral compass and fierce dedication to justice, brilliantly showcased in episode 12.
The episode, called “Something Like a Curse,” depicts Rudo, having escaped Amo’s spell, violently attacking her, even though she is defenseless. This is notable as it may be the first action anime to show a hero so relentlessly punishing a female villain after she’s been subdued. The episode also explains that Rudo is driven by a powerful inner force – almost like a curse – that compels him to fight for his sense of justice without pause. While Rudo is an unusual protagonist, the series *Gachiakuta* as a whole offers many other unique elements, making it stand out from other action anime.
Gachiakuta Has Several Defining Elements of a New-Gen Shonen
The anime *Gachiakuta* portrays a society dominated by wealth, a theme common in many action-adventure shows. However, *Gachiakuta* uniquely focuses on this inequality, making its story feel surprisingly grounded, even with its fantasy elements. In Episode 14, after Rudo violently attacks the defenseless Amo, we learn about her tragic past. It’s revealed that Amo was a childhood victim, sold by her mother to an abuser who subjected her to years of physical and sexual abuse.
What makes *Gachiakuta* so compelling is its willingness to tackle difficult and heartbreakingly realistic issues, demonstrating a real depth rarely seen in anime. The series powerfully portrays the disturbing moment when Amo recognizes the abuse she suffered, highlighting how easily children can be taken advantage of by those who appear trustworthy. No other action anime has delved into such intense and authentic themes with this level of nuance. This sets *Gachiakuta* apart as a truly innovative shonen anime, proving that new doesn’t have to mean avoiding tough subjects. With the second part of the series coming this fall, *Gachiakuta* on Crunchyroll promises to get even more intense, and shonen fans won’t want to miss it.
