Crunchyroll’s Fall 2025 Anime Refuses to Back Down Amid AI Allegations

I was really excited for the *Mechanical Marie* anime, which premiered on Crunchyroll in October 2025! The manga is fantastic, so I had high hopes. But honestly, the first episode was a letdown. The animation from Zero-G and Liber was pretty basic, nothing special. What *really* caught people’s attention, though, was how they used beautiful, detailed still images throughout the episode. But almost immediately, fans started questioning if those stills were actually AI-generated. There were just a lot of weird inconsistencies in the visuals, and the rumors spread like wildfire on social media. It’s a shame, because I was so looking forward to this adaptation!

Akimoto, the creator of the anime, publicly acknowledged the artist Mizuno Uta and complimented the show’s visuals on their official social media account. She shared Uta’s portfolio, which included previous work strikingly similar to the anime’s style. While Akimoto didn’t directly address claims that AI was used in production, the timing and details of her post suggested it wasn’t a coincidence. Though her post aimed to dispel the rumors, it didn’t gain much attention, and the controversy continued. Despite the accusations, the animation studios haven’t commented. The second episode released on October 12th didn’t change the core element that makes the anime stand out.

What Is the Plot of Mechanical Marie?

Arthur Zetes, the wealthy heir to the Zetes Corporation, is a deeply distrustful man. Years of kidnappings and attempted attacks have led him to believe everyone is motivated by greed. To help manage his large estate, Arthur asks his butler to find a robotic maid. Since fully realistic robotic helpers don’t yet exist, the butler instead hires Marie, a highly skilled martial artist who maintains a completely emotionless facade.

Marie is desperate to pay off her parents’ debts, so she takes a well-paying job pretending to be a robot. At first, Arthur doubts her, but quickly becomes convinced she’s genuine when he notices she doesn’t react emotionally, even in risky situations. This mix-up leads to many funny moments as Marie protects Arthur from various threats while also looking after him in his mansion.

Arthur, a man who usually keeps people at arm’s length, finds himself falling for her as time goes on. New episodes of the anime *Mechanical Marie* will be released every Sunday on Crunchyroll, and the series will have a total of 12 episodes. While the manga isn’t available to read digitally yet, you can purchase physical copies from retailers like Yen Press and Amazon.
