I’ve been watching Crunchyroll’s newest anime, and it’s easily one of the most intense shonen series in years. From the moment it premiered in the summer of 2025, it’s been really captivating. The current story arc is doing something I haven’t seen before with its main character – showing a side of them that feels totally new for this type of show. Traditionally, shonen heroes are all about achieving their dreams, but they usually do so while being genuinely good people, always prioritizing the well-being of those around them. We often see them refuse to compromise their morals or team up with bad guys, even if it would make reaching their goals easier. This anime is really challenging that idea.
While stories often focus on a secondary character grappling with revenge, the new anime Gachiakuta is uniquely exploring this theme through its main hero, Rudo. Gachiakuta has quickly become notable for its unconventional protagonist, as revenge isn’t a typical motivation for a shonen hero. Now, with Rudo aligning himself with the villain to achieve his goals, the series is setting up a potentially groundbreaking storyline where the hero might actually join forces with the enemy.
Crunchyroll’s Gachiakuta Has an Opportunity to Bring a Shonen Hero Into a Different Light

Rudo, the main character in Gachiakuta, is set apart from typical heroes by his intense desire for revenge. As the story progresses and shows his increasingly ruthless side – even resorting to violence against someone defenseless – it’s becoming clear he’s a very unconventional protagonist. This willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals, including potentially aligning with the Raiders who share his aims, suggests he’s a hero unlike any other. Ultimately, Rudo is driven by a single purpose: to get revenge on those who live on the Sphere.
The leader of the Raiders has indicated they share Rudo’s goals and have a plan to reach the Sphere, creating a prime opportunity for Rudo to pursue his own objectives and get the answers he seeks. With the Cleaners discovering they’re inside the trash beast and gearing up to destroy it, Rudo’s moment to commit to a darker path – by betraying his allies – has arrived.
I’m really captivated by the current storyline in Gachiakuta. It feels like the perfect setup for a classic hero to take a much darker turn, fueled by pure anger. If the anime on Crunchyroll continues down this road, I think Gachiakuta could really shake up the typical shonen formula and offer something genuinely new – something we haven’t seen in a long time.
