So, guess what? The US Securities and Exchange Commission (or as I like to call it, the crypto police) has finally decided to sit down with the big wigs of crypto and finance. Let’s just hope they don’t start trading Pokemon cards instead. 😜
On April 7, they were all like, “Hey crypto traders, wanna chat about rules?” Spoiler alert: they named the roundtable “Between a Block and a Hard Place: Tailoring Regulation for Crypto Trading.” Yes, it’s just as dramatic as it sounds. 🎭
This roundtable is part deux in a riveting series about the mysterious world of crypto, led by their freshly baked Crypto Task Force (can we get a bake sale for that?). 🍪
In attendance are the crème de la crème: Uniswap Labs’ Katherine Minarik, Cumberland DRW’s Chelsea Pizzola, and Coinbase’s Gregory Tusar. You know, just the usual suspects who’ve danced with the SEC in the past. 💃🕺
Now, under Biden’s watch, they decided to sue Cumberland and Coinbase for all those pesky securities law violations, but plot twist, the lawsuits were like that one friend who keeps ghosting you—dropped this year under Trump’s administration. Didn’t see that coming, did ya? 👻
And speaking of ghosting, Uniswap Labs was under investigation in April 2024 for potential enforcement action, but then poof! That went up in smoke too. 🔥 Just call it an SEC magic trick!
Also joining this exclusive crypto soirée are NYSE’s Jon Herrick, FalconX’s Austin Reid, Texture Capital’s Richard Johnson, and UC Berkeley’s Christine Parlour. I mean, who doesn’t want to sit around a table discussing how to regulate digital coins? It’s the hottest ticket in town! 🎟️
And of course, we have some serious thinkers like Dave Lauer of We the Investors and Tyler Gellasch from Healthy Markets Association gracing the event. Nicholas Losurdo from Goodwin Procter will be our moderator. May the odds be ever in their favor! 🏹
Speaking of odds, acting chair Mark Uyeda and a team of crypto crusaders will represent the SEC. They’re calling it the “Spring Sprint Toward Crypto Clarity.” Sounds like a title for a college spring break film that’s just a bit too hopeful, right? 📽️
SEC’s Uyeda in deep with staff crypto comments 😱
Now, in a twist more unexpected than a plot point in a romance novel, Uyeda proclaimed they’ll review staff crypto statements, thanks to Trump’s deregulation executive order. Yup, the dog’s back in the yard! 🐶
He mentioned this review is to see what needs to be modified or, dare I say, ‘rescinded’. Sounds like a great way to clean out the attic, if you ask me! 🧹
The first item on the chopping block? An April 2019 analysis on whether crypto sales could be considered investment contracts. Basically, the SEC is saying, “Oops!” You know, just your casual oversight. 🙈
They’re also taking a good hard look at two Division of Investment Management statements about risky Bitcoin futures and how state-chartered banks are behaving. Maybe they should consider writing a memo just to remind everyone they’re still *watching*! 👁️
Lastly, they’ll even dive into a 2022 Division of Corporation Finance statement about documenting impacts of crypto bankruptcies on their businesses. Talk about a reality check! 📉
