Crypto.com sponsors golf tournament with prize of $10M in CRO token

As a seasoned crypto investor and golf enthusiast, I find the Crypto.com Showdown to be an intriguing blend of two worlds that I hold dear – sports and cryptocurrency. The prospect of witnessing a high-stakes golf match with a prize purse in Cronos tokens is both exhilarating and forward-thinking.

In December, golfers representing different tournaments will compete against each other with a reported prize of approximately 10 million dollars in digital currency (cryptocurrency). The title sponsor, Crypto.com, will award the inaugural cryptocurrency prize using their native Cronos token.

A good show for a big crypto purse

In a compact 18-hole tournament at the Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas, Nevada, the PGA Tour’s Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy will square off against LIV Golf’s Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau in an exciting showdown.

The occasion is likened to a Ryder Cup-type event, featuring rounds of four-ball matches, individual contests, and alternate shot playoffs.

The purse in Cronos (CRO) exchange tokens is generous by golf standards. For example, big names Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson competed for $9 million in 2018. The Showdown pits golfers from the PGA Tour, which has origins dating to the 1910s against Saudi Arabian-backed upstart LIV Golf, founded in 2021. DeChambeau said in a statement:

“The Showdown has been about innovation from the beginning and our commitment to delivering the best entertainment possible for the fans. […] It is beyond exciting to have Crypto.com now on board to provide a true first with a crypto currency-based prize purse.”

The match will take place on Dec. 17 and will be televised on the TNT network.

Sports and crypto don’t always mix well

At Crypto.com, they’re recognized for their motto “Fortune favors the bold,” which has been voiced by famous figures like Matt Damon and Eminem. According to Crypto.com’s Chief Marketing Officer, Steven Kalifowitz, at Crypto.com, they seek out ‘innovations’ or ‘pioneering endeavors’.

The digital currency trading platform has collaborations with Formula One car racing, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and the FIFA World Cup for soccer. Additionally, it shares its name with the Crypto.com Arena located in Los Angeles.

Partnering with cryptocurrencies can have potential pitfalls as well. For instance, the National Basketball Association (NBA) faces possible legal action due to their endorsement agreement with collapsed crypto lending company, Voyager Digital.

Several prominent figures such as the Mercedes Formula 1 Team, Major League Baseball personnel, NFL legend Tom Brady, NBA sensation Steph Curry, and retired basketball player-turned-commentator Shaquille O’Neal have taken legal action concerning their business relationships with FTX.
