Crystal Dynamics Announces New Round of Lay-Offs, Will Not Affect Development of Tomb Raider

Crystal Dynamics has recently declared a fresh wave of job reductions within their company. This information was shared via a LinkedIn post, without specifying the exact number of employees impacted by these cuts. In the statement they issued, the studio explained that this move was taken to secure the studio’s future stability and longevity.

Today we chose to say goodbye to some of our outstanding team members due to changes within our business environment. This decision wasn’t taken lightly, but it is essential for preserving the longevity of our studio and focusing on our key artistic objectives as the market continues to change dynamically.

To all who are affected, we acknowledge and appreciate your diligence, skill, and fervor. Rest assured that we will extend all the assistance and tools available to us throughout this period of change.

Crystal Dynamics clarified that the recent job cuts won’t impact their work on the upcoming installment within the Tomb Raider series.

Hey there, gaming family! I just wanted to express my gratitude for sticking with us as we shape a creative, lasting, and adaptable future. This encompasses our joint efforts on the next chapter of the legendary Tomb Raider series, which stays untouched by recent decisions. Cheers!

The announcement arrives following Microsoft’s decision to halt development on “Perfect Dark”, a project shared between Crystal Dynamics and The Initiative. This game was one of several terminated by Microsoft amidst significant staff reductions within the company last month. In addition to “Perfect Dark”, another cancelled project was Rare’s “Everwild”.

Recently, Crystal Dynamics conducted another round of job cuts, following an earlier one in March where they dismissed 17 employees. The impact of these layoffs on the studio’s ongoing projects is currently uncertain.

2024, I’ve been eagerly following the latest updates on Tomb Raider. Just recently, the studio disclosed that they were on the hunt for talented developers, me included! Back in September, they were specifically seeking a Senior Franchise Artist to provide visual guidance for teams creating content under the Tomb Raider brand name.

The news that a fresh installment of “Tomb Raider” is under development emerged as far back as 2022. Simultaneously, the studio announced they would be using Unreal Engine 5 to create this game. As of now, no additional details about this project have been disclosed. It remains uncertain whether this new project will serve as a continuation of 2018’s “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” or if it represents another reboot for the franchise.

In 2013, a game called “Tomb Raider” was the beginning of a new series, and in 2015, there was another installment named “Rise of the Tomb Raider”. The third game in this series, released as “Shadow of the Tomb Raider”, follows Lara Croft’s early exploits, shaping her into the skilled and renowned character we know from previous games.

Crystal Dynamics has also previously worked on other projects, including Marvel’s Avengers.
