As a researcher studying software usability, I’ve been following the updates to Microsoft Notepad closely. It’s been a core part of Windows for decades, and while it’s changed over the years, the most recent version has sparked quite a bit of debate. There’s been a lot of discussion about why these changes have been controversial.
The latest version of Microsoft Notepad has added features like Microsoft Account login and optional AI integration with Copilot, which many users haven’t requested. However, a future version planned for 2026 promises genuinely helpful improvements, including tabs, enhanced text editing, markdown compatibility, dark mode, and the ability to save your work between sessions. We’re focusing on that last feature – session saving – today.
Twitch streamer Lacari was a popular creator, ranking within the top 1,000 on the platform, but he was recently permanently banned. The reason? When he opened the Notepad application, it automatically loaded a previous session that displayed a file containing links to illegal child sexual abuse material. He was unaware the file was there and didn’t realize it would appear when he opened Notepad.
Lacari tried to minimize the connection when asked about it during the live stream, but it was too late. He offered explanations like the links downloading automatically, but people online didn’t believe him.

Some users have pointed out that the new version of Notepad remembers highlighted text even when reopening a previous session. This implies that Lacari may have actually interacted with the links he stated he hadn’t, as his highlighting would have been saved.
After the controversy began, Lacari was quickly and permanently banned from both Twitch and Kick, and likely faced similar bans on other streaming sites. All social media platforms universally condemn and prohibit content depicting child sexual abuse material.
Okay, so Lacari just posted a really humble apology on X. He said he’d *never* seen content like that before, but then admitted he *was* struggling with some seriously problematic stuff. He basically promised he’s going to get his act together and change things, which is good to hear, honestly.
Lacari acknowledged sharing a link to harmful content, stating it was a serious mistake. They also admitted that joking about abusive material is unacceptable and can be damaging, and they failed to create a safe environment for their audience. “I recognize that trivializing abusive material on stream is not ok and can lead to real harm. It’s my responsibility to provide a safe space for my community and peers in which I failed to do.”
Lacari explained that he’s actively working to improve his behavior. He’s started a 30-day program to overcome his pornography addiction, which includes both therapy and the opportunity to exercise.
While streaming recently, I accidentally clicked a link that led to a list of titles. Some of those titles hinted at disturbing content involving child sexual abuse. I want to be clear: I have never viewed or supported anything like that, and I find it completely unacceptable. I continued my stream, intending to… January 24, 2026
Social media companies have always struggled with stopping the spread and misuse of harmful content. Platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook have faced scrutiny from regulators regarding their efforts to protect users from this type of material. Even gaming platforms like Roblox have been criticized for potentially allowing predators to connect with children.
Several countries, including Australia, are now banning children under 16 from using social media. The United Kingdom and Germany are considering similar laws. While platforms like Xbox and Discord are trying to get ahead of these rules by adding age verification, privacy advocates are concerned that these systems won’t adequately protect users’ personal information.
People sharing illegal content, like Lacari, will likely always be a problem online. However, this appears to be the first instance where Microsoft Notepad’s feature that saves open files has exposed someone potentially engaging in harmful activity. It’s currently unknown whether Lacari will face legal consequences for his actions.
