CBS has found huge success with its CSI franchise, starting with the original Crime Scene Investigation series which premiered in 2000 and ran for 15 seasons with over 300 episodes. The show, led by William Petersen, Marg Helgenberger, Jorja Fox, and George Eads, led to four spin-off series. Petersen later returned to the franchise, reprising his role as Dr. Gil Grissom in the first season of CSI: Vegas in 2021.
In a recent interview with People magazine, veteran actor Petersen, known for his nearly 200 appearances on the show, discussed the possibility of returning to the role that earned him three Primetime Emmy nominations as a producer. The actor, who hasn’t been seen on screen since 2021, shared that he is now happily retired and doesn’t plan to act again.
Petersen revealed he’s had the same agent for 15 years, but the agent hasn’t secured any work for him. He explained, ‘I’m not doing anything, and I won’t be.’ He shared this at a 40th-anniversary screening of his film To Live and Die in L.A. at Beyond Fest. Petersen also confirmed he’s glad his acting career ended with his 10-episode role as Grissom on CSI: Vegas.
Petersen explained he’s ready to step back from acting. After a long career with around 40 plays, several movies, and television roles, he feels he’s experienced what the profession has to offer. He’s now back in Chicago, where he began his career, and is prioritizing time with his friends and family. Petersen has children of various ages, including a daughter from a previous marriage and teenage twins with his wife, Gina Cirone, and is enjoying being a grandfather to older grandchildren.
I’ve been noticing a lot of changes lately, as many of my friends and family members are getting older,” Peterson explains. “It’s a time of reflecting on life and loss, and honestly, I’ve lost the desire to be in the public eye or on camera.
Why CSI: Vegas Was Canceled
William Petersen, an executive producer on CSI: Vegas, also appeared in the show’s first season. After three seasons, CBS canceled CSI: Vegas to create space for new programs, including NCIS: Origins. The final episode aired in May 2024 and achieved a record viewership for the series, drawing 4.8 million viewers – a 16% increase over its previous peak.
Paula Newsome, one of the stars of the show, recently shared her reaction to its unexpected cancellation in 2024. She admitted to TV Insider that it came as a complete surprise, especially considering the show’s strong ratings and dedicated fanbase. Ultimately, she acknowledged that business decisions don’t always go as planned.
The CSI franchise is streaming on Paramount+
