Fans of 90s movies are excited to hear that Matthew Lillard has hinted at a possible sequel to a popular cyber-thriller film. During an interview with ComicBook about his new Ghost Face Vodka (released February 9th), Lillard shared some details about the potential project, and also discussed sneaking alcohol into theaters and a recent comment from Quentin Tarantino.
So, we were chatting about how Scream 7 seems to be leaning into more personal stories, and it got me thinking. I asked Chris if he ever thought we might get a Hackers sequel, especially with everything going on in the world today. Turns out, Iain Softley – the original director – actually has a script! Chris and he were just talking about it, and they both feel like now would be the perfect time to revisit that world. He wasn’t sure about getting Angelina Jolie and Johnny Lee Miller back, but he definitely said he’s ready and willing to hack the planet again, which, as a fan, is all I needed to hear!
A Hackers Sequel Is Exactly What We Need
The movie Hackers is a beloved cult classic about a teenage computer whiz who gets wrongly accused of stealing a lot of money from a big company. When he was just 11, Dade Murphy was already an incredibly skilled hacker, and after causing chaos on Wall Street, he was forbidden from using computers until he turned 18. Once he reaches that age, he and his mother move to New York City, and he starts hacking again. This time, though, he encounters another talented hacker who challenges him. They both become part of a group that gets involved in a series of increasingly daring hacks and corporate espionage, all to prove who’s the best.
Despite negative reviews, the movie remains incredibly popular with fans. One viewer shared, “I’ve been watching this film since childhood and revisit it yearly. The cast, music, and fashion are all fantastic – I still admire the style! It’s one of those movies I know by heart.” Another fan explained that the film perfectly captures the vibe of the 1990s, calling it a true cinematic gem.
A new Hackers movie feels right now, and it would be fantastic to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt reprise his role as Cereal Killer.
