Cyberpunk 2 Won’t Release This Generation Based on New Report

Don’t expect to play Cyberpunk 2 for a long time – it might not even come out until the PS6 is released! Gaming is a fantastic form of entertainment, but waiting for sequels and new games can be really frustrating. Creating modern games with better graphics, bigger worlds, and more complex stories takes a lot of time – often five years or more for major developers. In fact, it’s estimated that Rockstar Games spent around eight years developing GTA 6, following a ten-year gap since GTA 5.

Gamers are used to waiting for highly anticipated games. While there are always other enjoyable titles to play – sometimes even unexpected gems like Expedition 33 – those dream games often take a very long time to develop. Unfortunately, Cyberpunk 2 will be a significant wait. The original Cyberpunk 2077 launched in 2020 with a lot of problems, but the developers, CD Projekt Red, worked for years to fix it. By 2023, with the release of the Phantom Liberty expansion, they finally achieved their original vision for the game. Despite its rocky start, Cyberpunk 2077 was incredibly popular with fans, which is now paving the way for a sequel.

Cyberpunk 2 Likely Won’t Release Until the PS6

CD Projekt Red has started work on the next Cyberpunk game, but it’s still very early in development. According to a recent report to investors, the game is currently in pre-production, meaning they’re creating prototypes and planning the overall design. The studio is also growing rapidly, aiming to double its team size over the next two years. This suggests that Cyberpunk 2 won’t likely be released until 2028 at the very soonest, given their plans for team expansion through 2027.

Rumors suggest The Witcher 4 might be released by 2028, potentially allowing developers to then begin work on Cyberpunk 2. However, a release for Cyberpunk 2 in 2029 or even 2030 seems more probable. If so, the game will likely launch alongside the next generation of PlayStation (PS6) and Xbox consoles, which are expected around 2027. While a release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S isn’t impossible, Cyberpunk 2 is most likely being built for the next wave of hardware.

While details are scarce about the Cyberpunk sequel, Keanu Reeves has said he’d be open to reprising his role. It probably won’t be as the original player character, V, which raises questions about how he’d fit in. However, if Reeves wants to return as Johnny Silverhand, it’s hard to believe CD Projekt Red would pass up the chance.
