Cyberpunk 2077 Absolutely Needs More DLC, And There’s One Way To Make It Happen

Since its release, Cyberpunk 2077 has become incredibly popular – a true comeback story, a cautionary tale for game developers, and a contender for one of the best open-world games of all time. Its journey has been remarkable, and it’s interesting to consider whether the game would be as well-loved today if it hadn’t launched with so many problems. Those initial issues, and the years of updates and improvements that followed, actually kept the hype alive and attracted a new wave of players long after its original release.

Despite significant improvements through patches and the fantastic Edgerunners anime, Cyberpunk 2077 appears to be losing momentum. It’s unfortunate, especially since more people are playing the game now than ever before, largely due to its availability on Xbox Game Pass and those updates. You’d think CD Projekt Red would be planning new content, but that doesn’t seem to be happening. We might not see any more Cyberpunk 2077 expansions for quite some time, which would be a real loss.

Cyberpunk 2077 Needs DLC To Tide Over Fans

CD Projekt Red has confirmed they don’t plan to release any more downloadable content (DLC) for Cyberpunk 2077. They added a quick note saying they’ll let fans know if that ever changes, but it seems the game’s development is winding down. Considering Cyberpunk 2077 is almost six years old, it’s already received support for a remarkably long time compared to similar games. So, while it’s a little sad to hear, the lack of future DLC isn’t entirely unexpected.

Unlike many other game studios that quickly move on to the next installment in a series, CD Projekt Red has continued to support Cyberpunk 2077 for a long time. They’ve also started work on its sequel, Project Orion, with pre-production beginning in 2025, indicating it’s still years away from release. On top of that, the studio is heavily focused on developing a new Witcher trilogy, planned to be released over six years – the same amount of time Cyberpunk 2077 has been available.

It seems CD Projekt Red is planning to develop the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 secretly while releasing The Witcher 4 and its follow-ups between 2027 and 2033. They’d likely launch the Cyberpunk sequel soon after, possibly as early as 2034. This could mean waiting eight more years for another Cyberpunk game – a full fourteen years after the original. While it’s possible they could release it between Witcher games, even that scenario would still mean a ten-year gap between titles.

Honestly, waiting this long for the next installment in a series I love is brutal, especially when the first game was so amazing. It would have been a little easier to deal with if they’d at least released the promised DLC or the multiplayer mode for Cyberpunk 2077, but I’m not holding my breath on that happening. There is a possible fix, though – CD Projekt Red could let another studio take over and finish the DLC! I know it’s a long shot, but I’ve heard they’re considering something similar with another game, so maybe there’s still hope for Cyberpunk 2077.

CD Projekt Red Should Hand Cyberpunk 2077 Over To Another Studio

Rumors suggest that The Witcher 3 might receive new downloadable content in 2026 – over a decade after the game first came out. That’s a surprisingly long time for a game to still be supported, and it’s not typical in the gaming world. While it’s currently just a rumor, the available evidence strongly suggests it’s happening, and that it will likely bridge the story between The Witcher 3 and the next game in the series. Interestingly, this DLC isn’t being made by CD Projekt Red themselves, which is a key detail and relevant to discussions about Cyberpunk 2077.

I’m hearing rumors that CD Projekt Red is working with Fool’s Theory – a studio made up of a lot of former CDPR developers – on this new DLC. It makes a lot of sense, honestly, since Fool’s Theory is already helping CDPR with the Witcher remake they announced way back in 2022. They clearly know the Witcher world inside and out! It really gets me thinking though… if they can do a big DLC for The Witcher 3, could we finally see a similar expansion for Cyberpunk 2077? I’m betting the answer is yes – and that’s super exciting!

CD Projekt Red has collaborated with other studios on Cyberpunk 2077 before. Virtuos, known for the Oblivion Remastered release, assisted with recent updates to the game. CDPR has also outsourced content like the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 trading card game to different companies. While CDPR isn’t a board game specialist, their decision to license the Cyberpunk 2077 intellectual property – rather than the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG – suggests they might be open to outsourcing work on the game itself as well.

As the release of Project Orion approaches, CD Projekt Red might choose to have another studio, like Fool’s Theory, create a smaller piece of downloadable content. This would be a good way to keep the Cyberpunk world active and engaging. While CDPR is already planning three Witcher games over the next few years, and it might seem like a lot to ask for more Cyberpunk content, many fans – including myself – are more interested in Cyberpunk than The Witcher. I understand that fans aren’t entitled to anything, but the player bases for both games are likely different. Given how long it takes to develop games nowadays, outsourcing smaller projects could be a smart strategy. Fallout: New Vegas is a great example of this working well – many fans actually consider it the best game in the Fallout series.
