Cyberpunk 2077 VR Mod Removed Following DMCA Takedown Request by CD Projekt

Luke Ross, a mod creator, is famous for bringing VR compatibility to games not originally designed for it. However, his mods have often been taken down due to copyright claims, as he offers them exclusively through his Patreon page. Most recently, CD Projekt Red requested the removal of his Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod, which Ross has confirmed he has done.

Ross recently shared on his Patreon that CD Projekt seems to be following a similar path as Take-Two Interactive. Take-Two, the company behind Rockstar Games, previously requested the removal of fan-made modifications (mods) for games like Grand Theft Auto 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Mafia: Definitive Edition back in 2022.

“Now that the dust has settled, I’m even more sorry to announce that we are leaving behind an adventure that so many of you deeply loved and enjoyed. CD PROJEKT S.A. decided that they would follow in Take-Two Interactive Software’s steps and issued a DMCA notice against me for the removal of the Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod,” wrote Ross.

He also explained that CD Projekt would only permit the Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod to continue if Ross removed the requirement for users to subscribe to his Patreon account to access it. Ross chose to discontinue the mod rather than offer it for free.

Honestly, I was glad they at least responded, even if it was through their lawyers and a VP. But the bottom line was frustratingly clear: companies always prioritize profit, but they expect modders to work for the love of the game, not for any kind of compensation. It just felt really unfair.

Jan Rosner, a VP at CD Projekt, explained on social media that a recently released mod violated the company’s rules regarding fan-created content. According to their guidelines, mods can’t be sold or used to make money without CD Projekt’s permission. Rosner stated they contacted the mod creator, Luke, last week and requested he either make the mod free (with the option for donations) or remove it entirely.

Ross also announced his next project will be adding virtual reality (VR) support to the popular RPG Baldur’s Gate 3, made by Larian Studios. He finished his announcement by sharing a first, untested version of the mod with the public.

He decided to release the new version today, even though it hadn’t been fully tested. He admitted it might have a few issues, but was confident they could fix them quickly, as they always do. He wanted to finish things on a good note.

The removal of the Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod happened shortly after Meta revealed it was shutting down several game development teams within its Reality Labs VR division.

The recent closures have impacted several studios, including Armature Studios, Twisted Pixel, and Sanzaru Games. Camouflaj, the team behind Batman: Arkham Shadow, hasn’t closed entirely, but they’ve had layoffs. The remaining employees are now focused on projects that fit Meta’s current goals.
