After initially saying they wouldn’t support it, Cyberpunk 2077 will finally be updated for the PS5 Pro on April 8th. The update utilizes the new PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology, which has been added to other games recently, but CD Projekt RED is promising an experience that exceeds typical upgrades.
Kuba Knapik, Global Art Director and VP, explained in a PlayStation Blog post that the team aimed to fully utilize the PlayStation 5 Pro’s advanced features – like 4K graphics, improved performance, and enhanced ray tracing – to elevate the Cyberpunk 2077 experience. Their goal was to make Night City look its absolute best by maximizing both the game and the console’s capabilities.
In addition to PSSR, which enhances visuals to sharp 4K detail, the developers improved ray tracing with an 8-way Bounding Volume Hierarchy. This allows for more complex scenes and helps the lighting match the intended artistic style of the game’s world.
According to Knapik, the PS5 Pro significantly enhances the feeling of being inside the world of Cyberpunk 2077. He describes envisioning the sunlight reflecting off your vehicle, the Yaiba Kusanagi CT-3X, as you drive into shadowy streets and discover hidden secrets illuminated by neon lights.
When it comes to ray tracing, there are three different options. The ‘Ray Tracing Pro Mode’ turns on all the advanced features, including realistic reflections, lighting, shadows, and ambient occlusion. If you have a monitor with a variable refresh rate, you can play at 40 frames per second. Otherwise, it runs at a smooth 30 FPS.
Performance Mode lets you play at up to 90 frames per second on VRR-compatible screens, offering a very smooth experience. Ray Tracing Mode prioritizes visual quality with ray tracing effects, while still maintaining a solid 60 frames per second.
