Cyclops Writer Teases a Scott Summers They’ll Be Glad is On Their Side in New Series First Look (Exclusive)

Marvel is treating comic book fans to a new Cyclops series in February – his first solo adventure in about ten years! But this won’t be the Cyclops everyone knows. As part of the new ‘Shadows of Tomorrow’ event, the story finds Cyclops fighting for his life, stranded in the mountains and pursued by Donald Pierce and the Reavers. To make things even harder, he’s lost his iconic visor. It’s a particularly dangerous situation for the hero, with the stakes higher than ever before.

ComicBook recently spoke with writer Alex Paknadel about his new Cyclops series, which promises a thrilling story and a fresh take on the character. Paknadel revealed that this story is larger in scope than most X-Men titles, but the most interesting part is the Scott Summers we’ll be seeing – he might be a little scary, but he’s definitely someone you’ll want on your team.

Cyclops Will Have a Depth and Scope We’re Not Used To

This new Cyclops series is a major event for X-Men fans – it’s his first solo title in ten years! We’re going to see him in a very unfamiliar situation. What makes this series different from other X-Men stories you’ve worked on?

This project is much larger in scope than my previous X-Men work, ‘Eversong.’ That earlier story helped build towards what other writers were doing with the main X-Men and Phoenix titles. But this time, it’s my own story, allowing me to fully realize my vision. It’s a standalone story, easy for new readers to jump into, and finally gives Cyclops the spotlight he deserves.

This book feels different from previous installments in the series. I described it to Darren Shan and Tom Brevoort as a gritty survival horror story, similar to films like The Grey or The Descent, and that’s what we delivered. Scott Summers is thrown into a dangerous wilderness stripped of his usual powers, so things get intense and violent. Rogê Antonio and I had a lot of freedom to create a truly brutal and exciting story, and I think readers will be shocked by how far we went. Ultimately, it’s a thrilling and action-packed read.

Everyone experiences things differently, but I know several people who’ve worked with this Scott before, and I’m sure it’s the same one. He’s just showing a side of himself he usually keeps hidden. I initially thought the tension between Scott and Logan wasn’t because they were so different, but because they were actually very alike. We’re used to seeing Wolverine give in to his wild side, and that internal struggle is a big part of why he’s so popular. I believe Scott faces the same battle within himself, but he can’t afford to let go. If he did, the consequences would be disastrous – he could accidentally destroy an entire city. His reserved personality isn’t about being uptight; it’s about the immense responsibility he carries, knowing that one mistake could cost lives.

What really struck me was how much this person reminds me of my father. My dad is the classic ‘go-to’ guy – everyone, including me, turns to him with their problems, and he handles it all with incredible patience. He’ll fix anything without complaining, which I admire. I love him dearly, but he’s always been a bit of a mystery – I rarely know what he’s thinking. Just like this person, my dad silently takes on everyone else’s worries and keeps his own feelings hidden. I didn’t expect to see that parallel, and it really hit me hard.

Without spoilers, what is something you think readers will be surprised by with this book?

I believe people will be a little intimidated by Scott Summers, and they’ll be grateful he’s fighting with us.

Cyclops #1, written by Alex Paknadel with art by Roge Antonio, goes on sale February 11, 2026.
