Cynthia Erivo Reacts to Ariana Grande Fan Incident at Wicked Premiere

Cynthia Erivo is holding space for a jarring experience.

As someone who’s been around events for a while, let me tell you, you always hope these things don’t happen. But when a fan recently tried to reach Ariana Grande at the Wicked premiere in Singapore, my instincts just kicked in. Afterwards, I’ve been thinking a lot about how quickly things can unfold and how important it is to be ready to protect those around you. It was definitely a moment, and I’m just glad everyone was okay.

She acknowledged the challenges they’ve faced, saying, “We’ve been through a lot, both in our personal lives and in our work. Even just this past week has been difficult.”

Honestly, we’ve all been through a lot, and making this movie has helped us grow – not just as performers, but as people, friends, and sisters.

Even though things didn’t go as planned in Singapore, Cynthia is thrilled to be playing Elephaba alongside Ariana’s Glinda in the upcoming Wicked movie.

The actor, 38, shared that people have connected with the film and its characters, finding a sense of comfort and validation in seeing themselves represented on screen. He said this connection is the greatest achievement he could hope for as an artist, and he’s grateful for the collaborative relationship with his colleague that allowed it to happen.

After the incident with a fan, Ariana sent a brief message to the country in Southeast Asia following the premiere.

“Thank you, Singapore,” the 32-year-old captioned a Nov. 14 Instagram post. “We love you.”

While the cast of Wicked travels the globe for premieres, some unforeseen issues have caused a few anxious moments. For example, when Ariana Grande had to miss the premiere in Brazil, she asked her fans to understand and accept the news calmly.

Honestly, it just breaks my heart to see people wishing bad things on her and the whole team. She posted on Instagram that they really did everything they possibly could, and she swears she’s the most devastated person right now. I get that we’re all upset and disappointed, but please, please don’t send them hate or assume they didn’t give it their all. It’s just… it’s too much.

The singer, known for her song “we can’t be friends,” also revealed how her team attempted to arrange a trip for her to South America.

Yesterday, I shared on Instagram that my team and I had to get off our flight because the plane needed repairs for a safety concern. The flight won’t be leaving until tomorrow morning, so unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it on time.

She explained that even if she tried to arrange a private flight, she’d need a permit, and those take time to get. She added that she was really upset about missing the event and asked everyone to send lots of love to her wonderful castmates, and to have a fantastic celebration.

Despite not being able to travel to Brazil, the Grammy-winning artist did attend events in London and Paris. While on the red carpet, she chose outfits inspired by the character Glinda, which paired nicely with Cynthia’s green looks.

I was absolutely captivated by Cynthia Erivo at the Australian Wicked photocall last November! She looked incredible in a stunning emerald and black Marc Jacobs blouse with a beautifully embroidered black skirt. She truly has a gift for making every appearance magical.

As a style expert, I’ve always said it’s all about balance, and she nailed it! She cleverly drew the eye back and forth between a charming fascinator and incredible platform shoes. Those shoes weren’t just a statement – they gave her a significant height boost, easily adding six inches to her already petite frame, and the overall effect was simply captivating.

Grande was the gift in bow-trimmed Bode at the Australian photo call.
