Daemons of the Shadow Realm & Witch Hat Atelier Officially Debut as Fullmetal Alchemist’s Newest Successors

For years, many have hailed Fullmetal Alchemist as a masterpiece of anime and manga. Even after the popular Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood finished airing 16 years ago, many fans still consider it the best anime ever made. However, this season sees the debut of not one, but two new anime series that could potentially take its place as the top show.

The Spring 2026 anime season is off to a fantastic start, with more exciting new shows than we’ve seen in a long time. If you enjoy detailed and captivating fantasy stories like Fullmetal Alchemist, be sure to check out two standout Crunchyroll series: Daemons of the Shadow Realm and Witch Hat Atelier.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm Marks Hiromu Arakawa’s Return to the Dark Fantasy Genre

Hiromu Arakawa’s debut manga series, Fullmetal Alchemist, ran for almost ten years, from 2001 to 2010, and is still popular today. Since finishing Fullmetal Alchemist, she’s created other well-regarded works, such as the heartwarming slice-of-life manga Silver Spoon and the manga adaptation of The Heroic Legend of Arslan novels.

I was so excited when Daemons of the Shadow Realm came out in 2021! It’s amazing to see Arakawa back to those epic, dark fantasy stories we all love, and in a continuing series format, no less. The story kicks off with the birth of twins, Asa and Yuru, who are basically opposites – one born during the day, one at night. Yuru grows up to be a skilled hunter in their quiet mountain village, while Asa lives a more secluded life. But everything changes when outsiders arrive, bringing not just guns and violence, but also some seriously strange, supernatural abilities that threaten their peaceful world.

A shocking tragedy strikes when one of the invaders kills Yuru’s sister, then surprisingly claims to be Asa – Asa’s long-lost sibling. This event awakens a new power within Yuru, allowing him to control two incredibly powerful supernatural beings called Daemons, and sets him on a path to fulfill his fate. Fans of Fullmetal Alchemist were highly anticipating the Daemons of the Shadow Realm anime, and the first episode delivered, immediately drawing viewers into the series’ mysterious and exciting world.

Given its focus on siblings and being created by the studio behind Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, it’s easy to see similarities between Daemons of the Shadow Realm and that acclaimed series. However, this dark fantasy story is incredibly original in its concept and how it’s told, and has the potential to become a beloved classic on its own merits, without needing to depend on the success of what came before.

Witch Hat Atelier’s Breathtaking Magical Adventure Is a Must-Watch For Fantasy Fans

The anime adaptation of Witch Hat Atelier generated even more excitement than Daemons of the Shadow Realm, and it lived up to the high expectations. The original Witch Hat Atelier manga, created by Kamome Shirahama, has been running since 2016 and has gained a dedicated fanbase. Although the anime took a while to develop, fans were happy to wait for this particular series.

The story of Witch Hat Atelier begins with a heartbreaking event, much like the start of the Elric brothers’ journey. Coco, a young dressmaker’s daughter, has always been intrigued by magic but believed it was something she could only dream of – until she learns that anyone can practice it with the proper techniques. Driven by her curiosity, Coco attempts a spell from an old book, but the magic goes wrong, tragically turning her mother to stone.

Despite a rocky start with magic, Coco’s experience leads to her acceptance into the witch community. She becomes an apprentice to the witch Quifrey, and begins studying magic with the hope of finding a way to save her mother. Witch Hat Atelier is widely celebrated for its beautiful art, complex story, and incredibly detailed fantasy world.

The first two episodes of Witch Hat Atelier beautifully recreate the wonder of the original story. The adaptation is filled with passion and a clear dedication to bringing Shirahama’s distinct artistic style to life. If you enjoy detailed and intricate fantasy stories, you shouldn’t miss Witch Hat Atelier.

Crunchyroll’s Latest Hits Inspired By Fullmetal Alchemist Are More Distinct Masterpieces

Many consider Fullmetal Alchemist a classic anime fantasy series, and new shows in the genre are often measured against it. Daemons of the Shadow Realm, created by the same author, naturally faces similar expectations. However, the most important similarities between Witch Hat Atelier, Daemons of the Shadow Realm, and Fullmetal Alchemist aren’t about how they look on the surface.

These three fantasy stories stand out because they focus so much on their characters. They draw readers into enchanting, magical worlds, but ground those stories with relatable characters and explore universal themes and real-life challenges. Fans who enjoy the action and adventure of Fullmetal Alchemist will likely love Daemons of the Shadow Realm, while those who appreciate the character growth, detailed world, and meaningful themes of that same series will be captivated by Witch Hat Atelier.

The two biggest anime series launching in Spring 2026 are both impressive fantasy shows. They’re starting strong, building on the already popular stories they’re based on. It’s still early days, but Daemons of the Shadow Realm and Witch Hat Atelier both have the potential to become timeless classics, just like Fullmetal Alchemist.
