Dakota Fanning recently shared a heartwarming story about a lesson she learned from Steven Spielberg when she was a child. While talking about her new movie, All Her Fault, she remembered a special moment from filming War of the Worlds in 2005.
Dakota Fanning appeared alongside Tom Cruise in the hit science fiction film, War of the Worlds, where they played father and daughter Rachel and Ray Ferrier during an alien attack. In a recent interview with Deadline, she discussed her experiences as a young actress and recalled a touching moment from the set that continues to influence her approach to making movies.
I remember hearing a fantastic story from the set of the film, right before Thanksgiving. Everyone thought they were done for the holiday break after finishing the last shot of the day. But then, talk about a surprise! Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise completely blew everyone away with a really thoughtful gift. It was a genuinely heartwarming moment, as Fanning described.
I recall we were about to leave for Thanksgiving break, and it felt like the project was finished – a simple ‘Happy Thanksgiving!’ to everyone. Then, these massive doors opened to reveal a completely empty soundstage filled with around 2,000 pies! Steven and Tom had arranged them all as a special Thanksgiving treat for the crew. It was honestly amazing – so many pies!
It really showed me the value of going the extra mile for your team, acknowledging their hard work, and celebrating their accomplishments. It makes a big difference.
The movie War of the Worlds was a huge success, grossing over $600 million globally and becoming one of the top-performing films of 2005.
The original film was a big hit, but the 2025 remake didn’t fare well. Unlike the first movie, the remake went straight to streaming and completely missed theaters. Critics heavily panned the 2025 version of War of the Worlds, and it currently has a very low 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – based on only two positive reviews out of 49.
Experiences like the one on the set of Spielberg’s film have clearly influenced Dakota Fanning, helping her establish a remarkably consistent and diverse acting career. Following War of the Worlds, she successfully moved from teen roles in The Twilight Saga and Coraline to more mature parts in films like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Equalizer 3. She’s also starred in popular television series including The Alienist, Ripley, and The Perfect Couple.
Dakota Fanning has always been drawn to roles that really challenge her, and her latest, Peacock’s All Her Fault, is no exception. It’s a psychological thriller where she plays a mother dealing with the terrifying disappearance of her child, alongside Sarah Snook. I’ve noticed a pattern lately – she’s really leaning into these darker, more complex characters, and it’s clearly paying off. This role feels like a natural progression for her, and you can see hints of everything she’s learned from past projects, even way back to something like War of the Worlds. It’s a compelling performance that showcases how much she’s grown as an actress.
