Dakota Fanning Shares Birthday Gift Tom Cruise Sends Her Every Year

For Dakota Fanning, Tom Cruise’s birthday gifts are just the icing on the (coconut) cake.

The actress from A Perfect Couple isn’t the only one who receives a special Christmas gift from the Top Gun star. She recently shared that Tom Cruise has sent her shoes for her birthday every year since they worked together on the 2005 film War of the Worlds, and she confirmed whether he still continues this tradition.

During a conversation on the November 6th episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen and Brittany Snow, Dakota confirmed that he does, with a straightforward “Yes.”

Dakota revealed that the Mission Impossible star sends her “really nice shoes.”

The revelation prompted Brittany to jump into the conversation, “I have so many questions!”

And the Uptown Girls alum was happy to answer.

“It’s really as simple as that,” Dakota exclaimed. “He’s just always given me shoes.”

Brittany, the actress from Hunting Wives, followed up by asking if the person knew her size and what would happen if her size had changed over time.

Dakota assured everyone that Tom can definitely figure out her current shoe size. She explained that it has changed over time, but he’s been able to keep up with it.

Buying Dakota shoes every year for her birthday has become a tradition for Tom, but it wasn’t the first gift he gave her after they worked together on the Steven Spielberg sci-fi film. He originally gave her a Motorola Razr phone when she turned eleven.

In a 2024 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the star of All Her Fault explained how thrilled she was to get a pager. ‘I was 11 and didn’t have anyone to call or text yet,’ she said. ‘I just loved having it – it made me feel so cool!’

However, Tom’s adorable gifting tradition started the following year.

Dakota explained to Kelly Clarkson on her talk show that her father has a unique birthday tradition. It started when Dakota was a child, touring for War of the Worlds and finally able to wear adult shoes. She loved shoes so much, and ever since that birthday, her father has sent her a pair every year.

Their work together twenty years ago created many happy memories, and her connection with Tom was just one of them.

Dakota recently told Access Hollywood that she has vivid memories of the experience. She described working with Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise as incredibly special, saying it felt like the ultimate ‘movie’ experience, and she was aware of how unique it was even while it was happening.

Tom and Dakota aren’t the only celebrities who have a close relationship. Here are some other heartwarming friendships between stars.

Nicole, who has always loved her sister-in-law’s films, asked her a few years ago if she’d recreate some memorable scenes, even asking her to perform one from My Best Friend’s Wedding.

During a May 2024 appearance on the Everything Iconic with Danny Pellegrino podcast, she recounted telling Cameron, ‘I need you to run towards me from behind the luggage cart, towards the airport.’ She explained that she began directing Cameron, telling her exactly what to say while they were driving, and Cameron happily obliged, which she described as very kind of her.

Thankfully, Lawrence was available to spend time with us, otherwise we might have missed out on seeing one of our favorite friendships blossom! Their connection started when the Oscar-winning actress emailed Schumer after watching her 2015 movie, Trainwreck. Lawrence admitted she wrote, ‘I don’t even know where to begin. I guess I should just say it: I’m in love with you.’ They began emailing back and forth, which eventually turned into texting.

But their friendship really became strong when Schumer casually invited Lawrence to join her and her childhood friends for a trip to the Hamptons. Schumer was surprised when Lawrence accepted, but quickly realized she was ‘the coolest person you’ll ever meet,’ as she shared on The Daily Show. Lawrence fit right in and was ‘just one of the gang.’

Everyone could use a friend who’s successful and well-established, and Jennifer Lopez and Leah Remini have that in each other. They’ve been incredibly close ever since they met and instantly connected at the premiere of Man on Fire in 2004. Lopez described it as an immediate spark – feeling like she loved Remini and enjoyed being around her. Remini was also a proud supporter when Lopez performed at President Joe Biden’s inauguration, telling TopMob News she was incredibly inspired by her friend, a girl from the Bronx, and that it was beautiful to watch.

Considered the ultimate celebrity friendship, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, and Lisa Kudrow have remained close since they first bonded while working on the Warner Brothers lot. A source revealed to TopMob News that their shared experience on the show Friends created a strong foundation for their lasting bond. Just like staying in touch with former colleagues, they prioritize regular get-togethers, from casual happy hours to larger reunions. The source added that it’s easy for them to connect, whether it’s for Courteney’s Sunday dinners or pool parties at Jennifer’s house, and that they maintain a deep and enduring connection.

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey have been incredibly close friends ever since they met in an improv class in 1993, and they consider each other family. Poehler, who has one younger brother named Greg, explained to PopSugar while promoting their 2015 movie Sisters that she and Fey are like the sisters she always wanted. She described their bond as a special connection that has brought a unique kind of family experience to her life.

Philipps described meeting Williams on the set of Dawson’s Creek as love at first sight. They instantly connected as friends and quickly fell into a comfortable, slightly rebellious rhythm – sharing wine, cigarettes, and even getting into the occasional bar fight. That initial connection blossomed into a lasting love. Luckily for fans, we get a glimpse into their lives as they navigate red carpets, coordinate outfits, and playfully experiment with Williams’ hair color, like that perfect millennial pink.

I’m absolutely buzzing about the potential collaboration between Drake and Adele! It’s amazing to think that after years of admiring each other’s work – and racking up a combined 19 Grammys, no less! – they’re finally seriously talking about making music together. Adele even told etalk she wants to do an official remix, and she’s such a huge fan – she actually ordered the red coat from Drake’s video! Can you believe it? Drake’s response was just as sweet – he said he’d do anything for Adele, even laundry! They didn’t jump straight into the studio, though. They just chilled, grabbed some food, and went bowling in L.A. Honestly, I’m already hoping for a phone call letting us know when this incredible track is dropping!

After receiving great support from other women during her pregnancies, Washington has made it a priority to offer the same to her celebrity friends. She shared with Entertainment Tonight that she aims to have open and honest conversations, particularly with Eva Longoria. Longoria greatly appreciated Washington’s advice when she welcomed her son, Santiago, in 2018, jokingly referring to Washington as her ‘doula’.

After more than two decades since winning an Oscar for Good Will Hunting, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are collaborating again on the film The Last Duel. Despite not having worked together on screen for a while, their close friendship remains strong. Damon explained to Entertainment Tonight that they’ve known each other for 35 years and grew up together, sharing a mutual passion for acting and filmmaking. He believes this shared obsession during their younger years created a lifelong bond.

The friendship between two prominent TV personalities began in 1976 while they worked at a Baltimore station. Although Oprah Winfrey was an anchor and Gayle King a production assistant, and they didn’t typically socialize due to the newsroom’s structure, a snowstorm brought them together. Oprah invited Gayle, who earned $12,000 a year as a PA, to stay at her house. The next day, they went shopping at the mall, and a lasting friendship blossomed over sweaters at Casual Corner.

While your dates probably don’t involve Wimbledon or palaces, Meghan Markle and a certain tennis star actually connected in a very relatable way. They first met at a 2014 Super Bowl event and instantly bonded. As Meghan wrote on her now-defunct website, The Tig, they spent the time taking pictures, laughing during a flag football game, and chatting about everyday things – not tennis or acting, but typical ‘girl talk’.

Even though Game of Thrones has ended, the close bond between Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams remains strong. Williams, who was a bridesmaid at Turner’s wedding to Joe Jonas in 2019, playfully suggested that the biggest reward of the show’s eight seasons wasn’t its 12 Emmy Awards. She told TopMob News at the final season premiere that the show felt like a long journey to find her best friend, calling it “incredible” and describing having such a supportive friend during the show’s intense run as a “godsend.”

Everyone’s heart probably melted when Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively reacted with joy as their oldest daughter, James, recognized Taylor Swift’s song “Gorgeous” at a concert. Lively later jokingly called the video embarrassing, telling Robin Roberts on Good Morning America that it showed their unfiltered, over-the-top pride as stage parents. But the genuine friendship between the families – filled with Fourth of July celebrations at Taylor Swift’s Rhode Island home, gatherings at Reynolds and Lively’s country house, and appearances in Swift’s music videos – is something special and worth cherishing.

Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon have a friendship that goes way back, even before their Apple TV+ show, The Morning Show. They first acted together in 2000 when Witherspoon had a short role on an NBC hit, and she was still nursing her daughter, Ava. Witherspoon remembers being surprised when Aniston kept asking about the baby on set. “I was like, ‘I know, it’s weird,'” Witherspoon told Harper’s Bazaar, recalling having to explain she was pumping breast milk. Despite feeling a little awkward, Witherspoon said Aniston was incredibly kind, and they’ve been close friends ever since.

Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg have an unlikely but captivating friendship that began at the 2015 Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber. It blossomed further when they co-hosted the VH1 cooking show, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party. Snoop Dogg explained to LA Weekly that Martha is different from people he’s usually around, but surprisingly relatable. He appreciates that she’s genuine and down-to-earth, despite coming from a different generation. He feels a strong connection with her because she’s straightforward and doesn’t shock him, making their collaboration feel natural and almost like a perfect match – a ‘holy matrimony,’ not a ‘holy macaroni.’
