Dakota Johnson has had all shades of acting experiences.
This includes dealing with difficult auditions. The Fifty Shades of Grey actress recently shared a story about one where she found out she didn’t get the role during the audition itself.
Dakota recently shared a story about an audition she had. She explained that after going to a callback, she went into the room, greeted everyone, performed the scene, and then left, as she told Hits Radio UK in an interview published on TikTok on March 23.
The 36-year-old said people told him that introducing himself and shaking hands came across as arrogant and like he was trying too hard to impress them.
And the Materialists star—whose parents are actors Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson—couldn’t believe it.
She was shocked when she didn’t get the job. They told her it was because she came across as arrogant, but she felt she was simply being polite. She thought the whole situation was really strange.
Oh my gosh, Dakota being honest about her struggles isn’t new at all! I mean, she actually said her guest spot on The Office was “the worst time of my life!” Can you believe it? It’s just so refreshing that she’s real, even when things didn’t go perfectly. I just adore her for it!

She told Seth Meyers in February 2024 that she was a huge fan of the show. When they asked if she’d be in the series finale, she immediately said yes, expecting only a short appearance – maybe half a day of filming.
But, as she noted, “I was there for two weeks and I’m barely in the f–king show.”
Dakota mentioned that filming the last episode felt strange, and not just because it took a lot of time. The atmosphere among the cast just wasn’t right.
She described a disheartening atmosphere, explaining that the team had been struggling with negativity and difficult relationships for a decade. Despite her enthusiastic arrival, she felt completely ignored and unwelcome – people weren’t interested in connecting with her at all.
Dakota has definitely had some memorable roles, but she comes from a family of performers. Let’s take a closer look at her family background.

Melanie Griffith first met Don Johnson when she was 14 years old. He was 22 at the time and acting alongside her mother, Tippi Hedren, in the 1973 film The Harrad Experiment.
Tippi told People magazine in 1989 that she fell in love with him very quickly, describing it as a teenage crush.
Melanie and Don’s relationship moved quickly. She was only fifteen when she started living with him, and they became engaged at eighteen. They ran off to Las Vegas and got married on January 8, 1976, even though Don had confessed to being with someone else – a beauty queen – the night before their wedding.
Melanie explained to People magazine that she and her partner considered marriage as a way to fix things, but it ultimately didn’t work. Surprisingly, she said she actually got married to end the relationship, and they later had the marriage annulled.

In the early 1980s, Don was in a relationship with actress Patti D’Arbanville, who was also known as a muse to Andy Warhol and the inspiration behind Cat Stevens’ song “Lady D’Arbanville.”
Don shared with People magazine in 2024 that he met the mother of his first son while working on a film in New York City. He visited Andy Warhol’s Factory and found her posing nude on a table – she was shooting the first-ever cover for Interview magazine. He described her as incredibly beautiful and captivating.
Their first encounter was likely in 1973, when Patti appeared on the cover of Interview magazine (though she wasn’t the first), but they didn’t become a couple until 1981. The story goes that Don went to a restaurant in Los Angeles with his girlfriend, Tanya Tucker, and ended up leaving with Patti instead.
“She moved in that night,” he told People in 1984. “And we stayed in bed for about eight days.”

Don and Patti welcomed son Jesse Wayne Johnson on Dec. 7, 1982.
Don told People magazine he’d explained to Patti that he wasn’t ready to get married, and she’d responded by saying she wasn’t looking for that either.
The star of Miami Vice, after struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, said that having a young family helped him begin to get sober.
He recalled walking into the breakfast room one morning in 1984 and seeing his wife, Patti, feeding their baby. The sun was shining and birds were singing, but he felt a sense of desperation. He realized Patti was on the verge of leaving him. He stumbled in, sat down, and confessed, ‘Patti, I’m an alcoholic and addicted to drugs, and I’m going to get help.’
Let’s talk about relationships – mine, specifically. My marriage with Patti ended back in 1985. Life moves on, and Patti has actually been married and divorced three times since then. She’s now a mom to three wonderful children with her most recent ex-husband.

Jesse is both a musician and an actor. He first appeared on screen in 2001 in an episode of his father’s popular show, Nash Bridges. More recently, he had a guest role on his dad’s new hit series, Doctor Odyssey.
Jesse was raised in Aspen, Colorado. Although he studied theater at Occidental College in Southern California, his Instagram feed shows he still loves skiing and spending time with his large family.
He’s also the singer and guitarist for the band Blame Baby, which he describes as playing rock music that feels nostalgic for a simpler time.

Stephen Bauer, known for his role in Scarface, starred in the comedy She’s in the Army Now. He and Melanie Griffith were married from 1983 to 1987.
Although she’s been less public about their relationship and their son, Alexander, the former couple has stayed friendly. They were even seen getting cozy together at the 2013 premiere of Dark Tourist.
In a 2020 interview with People magazine, Melanie shared that she remained friends with all three of her former husbands, saying, “I love them with all my heart.”

Alexander Griffith Bauer was born on August 22, 1985. After his parents divorced, he mainly lived with his mother in Los Angeles.
Unlike some of his brothers and sisters, he generally keeps to himself. However, he often shows up at family events, especially those focused on the Johnsons. Though he’s dabbled in writing and acting, he’s primarily worked as a grip on film sets, meaning he works behind the scenes to help with camera support and movement.
In 2021, Melanie shared a photo of her sons, Jesse and Alex, on Instagram, writing, “Happy National Sons Day! I love these amazing guys so much.”

Like moths to a flame, Melanie and Don got back together…eventually.
In 1987, Don suggested Melanie appear as a sophisticated club owner on Miami Vice, and they began a casual, on-again, off-again relationship. During their breaks, Don dated Barbara Streisand, and Melanie saw an investment banker. However, in 1988, Don supported Melanie’s decision to get sober, and she entered the Hazelden Foundation in Minnesota with his encouragement that May.
She recalled that her husband had been encouraging her to go to Hazelden, a treatment center, for about two years. She clarified that this wasn’t because she was using drugs, but explained that even one drink can be harmful for someone struggling with alcoholism. Her husband, Don, had been actively involved in Alcoholics Anonymous since 1983 and was a constant source of support for her.
Melanie was pregnant when they wed again on June 26, 1989.
Don described their family as being like the classic television family, Ozzie and Harriet, mentioning that their son, Alexander, lived with them and Jesse visited often. Melanie then jokingly added that everyone in the family hoped for a daughter.

Dakota Mayi Johnson was born Oct. 4, 1989.
Oh my gosh, ever since 1999, she’s just been living the dream! She actually started in ‘Crazy in Alabama’ – can you believe it? – with her mom, and Antonio Banderas directed it! But then, she really took off, becoming a huge star with ‘Fifty Shades’ (I’ve seen it, like, a million times!), and then she was in ‘A Bigger Splash,’ ‘How to Be Single,’ that amazing horror movie ‘Suspiria,’ and even ‘Madam Web’! Seriously, she’s incredible in everything she does.
Honestly, I get what she means when she says the whole ‘nepo baby’ talk is frustrating. It’s not like joining a family business is unusual – people do it all the time, and it feels like she’s just getting flak for something pretty normal. She finds it incredibly annoying, and I really understand why.
She remembered telling Pedro Pascal in an interview with Elle in 2025 that she began auditioning for roles. There were times when work was scarce, and she sometimes had to ask her parents for financial support. She expressed gratitude for her parents’ help, but admitted it wasn’t a pleasant experience, describing the audition process as incredibly difficult.
Melanie’s parents divorced in 1996, but she’s stayed close to her entire blended family – her stepmother, former stepfather, and all her half-siblings, whom she considers her full siblings.
Dakota Johnson has said she had a very communal upbringing, being raised not just by her mother and father, but also by stepparents, caregivers, teachers, and even the parents of her friends and partners. In a 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she explained that she always sought to learn from everyone around her, and she remains that way today. She credits her unique upbringing and the many people who helped raise her as the reason she is who she is, expressing gratitude for her ‘crazy life’ and her parents.

Dakota Johnson and Coldplay singer Chris Martin were in a relationship from 2017 to 2025. In June, multiple sources confirmed to People magazine that the couple had permanently split, after years of keeping their relationship very private, which often led to rumors about their status.
Despite frequent reports of a split, they continued to live together in Malibu and consistently managed to dispel breakup rumors with a public appearance or statement.
As someone who’s seen a lot of blended families, I can tell you Dakota really embraced the role of another mother figure for Chris’ kids, Apple and Moses, from his marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow. She welcomed them with open arms, and that kind of warmth is everything when building a new family dynamic.
“I love those kids like my life depends on it,” Dakota told Bustle in 2024. “With all my heart.”
I was so happy to hear Gwyneth talk about her friendship with Dakota! She mentioned in an Instagram Q&A last year that they’re actually really close, which is lovely. It’s nice to know she’s got such good friends, especially since she married Brad Falchuk back in 2018 and he already had two children.

Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas were both married to other people when they met on the set of the 1995 film Too Much. Antonio had been married to Ana Leza since 1987. However, they both divorced their spouses the following year and married each other in London on May 14, 1996. Their daughter, Stella, was born four months later.
They announced their divorce in June 2014, releasing a statement that emphasized they were ending their marriage amicably and with continued respect for each other, their family, and friends, while cherishing the good times they’d shared.
Similar to her behavior with Don, Melanie remained close to Antonio, who has been in a relationship with Nicole Kimpel since 2015.
Antonio told Fox News Digital in 2023 that he and his ex-wife remain close friends. He has no ill will towards her, describing her as a wonderful woman and cherishing the 20 years they spent together.
“We definitely had our ups and downs,” he said, “but I’ll always cherish the wonderful times we shared, especially those involving our children and family.”
And when he travels to L.A., he added, the first thing he does is call Melanie.
Antonio explained that having dinner together is a priority for his family, and it’s something everyone values. He emphasized that it’s important not just for his immediate family, but for the entire extended family as well.

Stella Del Carmen Banderas was born Sept. 24, 1996.
Oh my gosh, Antonio just told Fox News the most amazing thing about his daughter! It’s not just that she’s a stunning model and launched her own fragrance, Lightbound, back in 2021 – which, by the way, is incredible – but he said she has this intellectual way of looking at movies! It’s like, I knew she was brilliant, but to hear that confirmed? I’m obsessed! She doesn’t just see a film, she understands it on a whole other level. It just proves she’s more than just a pretty face, she’s a true artist!
He mentioned she’s busy making short films, directing them, and has a background in acting. She’s also planning to direct commercials, and he believes her future lies in directing feature films. Interestingly, she and her father later appeared together in a Mercedes commercial that aired in Europe.
In August 2024, Stella announced her engagement to businessman Alex Gruszynski. She shared the happy news on social media, writing, “I get to spend forever with my favorite person!”
Melanie announced the engagement of Stella and Alex on Instagram, sharing that Alex proposed on one knee and Stella said yes! She noted their love story began way back in preschool, calling it “true love, deep love!”
Stella and Alex later married in October 2025. Antonio, Stella’s father, described the wedding as a deeply emotional and joyful family reunion, thanking everyone who helped make it happen.

In 2015, Dakota, her grandmother Tippi Hedren, mother Melanie Griffith, and sister Stella all dressed stylishly for the 22nd annual ELLE Women in Hollywood Awards.

Don met Kelley Phleger, a nursery school teacher who had previously dated California Governor Gavin Newsom, at a birthday party for San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown in the mid-1990s. They began dating in 1997.
The couple got married on April 29, 1999, at the home of Gordon Getty, a member of the prominent Getty oil family, and have remained together ever since.
In a 2024 interview with People magazine, Don described his relationship as being built on kindness, trust, and respect. He shared that they enjoy being both lovers and friends, and he thinks she’s an incredible person.
Kelley celebrated her 26th wedding anniversary on Instagram with a heartfelt message to her husband. She reminisced about their incredible journey together, saying she wouldn’t change a single day of their 26 years. They’ve faced everything life has thrown their way, and their love has only grown stronger. Kelley also expressed gratitude for their beautiful family and looks forward to continuing their life together, side by side.

The actor’s life is much calmer now than it was during his time on Miami Vice. Back then, the show needed round-the-clock security, and he couldn’t even step outside without being surrounded by fans eager to meet the character Sonny Crockett.
As a big fan of Don Cheadle, I always find his insights really relatable. He recently shared with People how tough it is to balance work and family as an actor – movies and TV really take over your life! But he’s at a great point in his career now where he can choose projects that fit his life. He actually often prefers supporting roles these days, because he still loves acting, but doesn’t want to be stuck working crazy hours and missing out on time with his family. It’s refreshing to hear him prioritize that balance!

Don and Kelley’s first child together, Atherton Grace Johnson, was born Dec. 28, 1999.
Growing up in Santa Barbara, California, she lived a fairly normal childhood, only occasionally appearing with her parents in public. She later went on to study photography at USC.
I was so excited to see Grace make her Met Gala debut back in 2019, alongside Dakota! It was amazing. She’s really taken off since then – she’s modeled for Bello magazine, walked the runway for Gucci, and even appeared in a music video for her brother Jesse’s band. I’m a huge fan and can’t wait to see what she does next!
In a 2019 interview with Glamour Spain, she described her relationship with her sister, Dakota, as a close friendship. She explained that Dakota has always treated her as an equal, despite their age difference.

Jasper Breckenridge Johnson was born June 6, 2002.
He played basketball at a high school in Santa Barbara. His father often posts about how tall he and his brothers are on Instagram, and he notes that his parents have always been incredibly supportive, never missing any of his games.

He also shared his plans to study business in college, earn a four-year degree, and ultimately build a career in the field, in addition to his dream of playing basketball.

The arrival of son, Deacon James Johnson, on April 29, 2006, completed the family – at least for that generation – and reportedly made Don incredibly happy.
Like Jasper, his Instagram account is private, but his bio says “Sb usc,” which likely refers to the college he’s attending.
Deacon’s family and friends call him “Chap.” His mom affectionately wrote on his 19th birthday, “Happy 19th, Chap! We love you, Deacon James, and you’re the best youngest child we could ask for! You’re the Dude!”
