Dakota Johnson’s Intimate R-Rated Hit Secures New Streaming Home Next Month

A popular movie starring Dakota Johnson is now available on a new streaming service, after previously being on Netflix. Released widely in 2024, the film was a surprising success, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 75% from critics and an impressive 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Christy Hall makes her directorial debut with this film, which features Sean Penn as a New York City taxi driver. He picks up the main character, played by Johnson, at JFK Airport, and during the ride to Manhattan, they have open and honest discussions about relationships, sex, loss, and what it means to love.

While not a groundbreaking film, Daddio is worth watching when it arrives on Hulu starting April 26th. Dakota Johnson delivers a solid performance alongside Sean Penn, who truly shines as the most engaging character. The movie features witty dialogue, explores relatable topics like dating and communication, and offers a surprisingly emotional experience for viewers who are willing to invest in its 101-minute length.

‘Daddio’ Was Involved in an Unfortunate Airline Incident

The film Daddio received an R rating due to its mature content, including explicit text messages and brief nudity. The film contains scenes of exposed breasts and an erect penis. While depictions of consensual adult activity aren’t typically an issue, showing such content to children is a serious concern.

In 2024, a Qantas flight traveling from Sydney to Japan experienced a technical issue. This prevented passengers from selecting their own in-flight entertainment, so the crew decided to play the same movie for everyone – a film called Daddio.

Once the airline realized the wrong movie was playing, they quickly changed it to something suitable for families. However, before they could, one passenger posted online that they’d been forced to watch 40 minutes of sexually explicit content. The airline then issued a statement saying:

We’re very sorry the movie shown on the flight wasn’t appropriate for all viewers. We immediately switched to a family-friendly film for the remainder of the flight, which is what we always do when we can’t offer individual movie choices. We’re looking into how the initial movie was selected to prevent this from happening again.

Sean Penn Was in His Feels Reading ‘Daddio’

Sony Pictures Classics

Johnson had been developing Daddio for years, and finally produced it through her company, TeaTime. She managed to get the film financed and then presented the script to Penn, who admitted to the Associated Press at the time that he wasn’t enjoying making movies.

Initially, I’d blame issues on the script or the director. But I realized I could be working with amazing people on fantastic projects and still feel just as unhappy. It made me realize the problem wasn’t always external.

Everything shifted when Fanning invited him to be in Daddio. He said he loved the script immediately, describing the feeling as similar to the excitement of landing your first film role.

Since returning to acting, Penn has starred in several films, most notably this year’s Best Picture winner, One Battle After Another, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
