Filming F1 has turned Damson Idris into an adrenaline enthusiast, as he confessed to ComicBook prior to the film’s release on June 27th. During interviews with several of his fellow cast members, he acknowledged that driving a Formula One racecar is somewhat habit-forming and expressed eagerness for future opportunities behind the wheel even after the movie wraps up. In the movie, Idris portrays Noah Pearce, one of two drivers for the Apex Grand Prix team, serving as the young counterpart to Brad Pitt’s character Sonny Hayes. The duo develops a fierce rivalry both on and off the track, with Idris describing the racing experience as an exhilarating escape he now seeks to replicate in his personal life.
When someone inquired if his job turned him into an adrenaline seeker, Idris quipped humorously, “Not at all! I even got myself a hybrid car, and I only travel 20 miles an hour.” With a chuckle, he added, “Yes, indeed [I am an adrenaline junkie]. The whole experience was the most thrilling thing imaginable, and it feels liberating to drive at such speeds. I’m just trying to find ways to do it more often.
In our chat with Idris Elba, joined by Kerry Condon and Javier Bardem, they all highlighted the collaborative spirit behind these races, despite only one person driving. They believed this team aspect effectively carried over into filmmaking, and Idris pointed out that the necessity to execute stunts flawlessly resembles the need for top performance in racing.
It’s amusing to be at the steering wheel. There’s a lot happening behind the scenes before we even start moving. Not only do we need to capture these shots, but Joe is in the editing room adjusting cameras and perspectives. So, in essence, someone else is contributing to this as well. And yes, they often remind me not to have any accidents, Damson.
As I, the movie reviewer, found myself immersed in the intense scenes of “Fast and Furious 9,” Idris Elba aptly conveyed the immense pressure he faced during filming. Ridley Scott, director Steven Condon, and the entire crew shared this sentiment, with Condon expressing her worry about the financial consequences of any mishap.
Elba eloquently described the daunting situation they were in: “We often had just five to ten minutes to capture those crucial shots,” he explained. “You climb into the car, sign the necessary papers, and the lighting is carefully arranged. The rest of the crew is on standby, eagerly awaiting our takeoff. Yet, Damson, our vehicle of choice, would occasionally stall. It’s a tense moment, as if to say, ‘Action!’ Vrrt!
The trio found Idris’ impression amusing, and he replied, “Don’t you guys recall the time something similar occurred for me in Belgium?
Viewers can look forward to watching Idris reach maximum velocity in no time, potentially even developing a thrill for speed themselves. The film “F1: On the Big Screen” is set to premiere in American cinemas on June 27th.
