Dan Aykroyd Talks the Future of the Ghostbusters Franchise

Since the original movie came out in 1984, the Ghostbusters franchise has made over $1.1 billion worldwide. Although the latest film, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, wasn’t a massive success, Dan Aykroyd, who co-wrote and starred in the first two movies, suggests the franchise still has a lot of potential.

Dan Aykroyd, best known as Ray Stantz from the original Ghostbusters and a writer on the first two movies, recently discussed the franchise’s future on the Talking Strange podcast. According to reports, Aykroyd hinted that more Ghostbusters films could be made.

Dan Aykroyd hinted at another Ghostbusters movie, saying they’re open to new ideas, even outlandish ones – he jokingly referred to them as ‘pink slime.’ He confirmed a new film is planned, but they’re still figuring out the best approach, and want to reflect current events and human behavior in the story.

Aykroyd added that the possibility is being explored, perhaps involving a negative or harmful force. He mentioned that Jason Reitman and the team at Ghost Corps in Los Angeles are developing ideas, and he’s eager to see what they come up with.

Ivan Reitman, who passed away recently, directed the original Ghostbusters in 1984 and its sequel, Ghostbusters II, in 1989. His son, Jason Reitman, directed and co-wrote 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife with Gil Kenan. The two also collaborated on writing the film. Now, Jason Reitman and Kenan are working together to create a new animated Ghostbusters series for Netflix, which has been officially approved.

Aykroyd Teases Upcoming Animated Ghostbusters Series

News about the upcoming animated Ghostbusters series has been scarce, but we now know it’s moving forward at Netflix. The show has been in development since 2022 and will feature 3D animation—a departure from the 2D style of the original 1980s series, The Real Ghostbusters. Creators aim for a similar tone to Afterlife and Frozen Empire. Elliott Kalan, known for his work on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Mystery Science Theater 3000, is the showrunner. Sony Pictures Animation is producing the series with Jason Reitman and Kenan leading the project under the Ghost Corps banner.

I was so excited to hear Dan Aykroyd talk about the new animated Ghostbusters show on the podcast! He said it’s going to be fantastic, and coming out very soon. What really struck me was how he described the characters, the overall vision, and even the way they’re portraying Manhattan. He seemed to hint that the show might tackle some important issues and offer a chance for healing and moving forward, which I think is a really wonderful idea.

Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II will be airing as part of on Nov. 29.
