Dan Levy Debated Schitt’s Creek Sequel Before Catherine O’Hara’s Death

Dan Levy isn’t interested in a Schitt’s Creek revival without Catherine O’Hara.

Just two months after the actress, who worked with Dan on the show, passed away after a short illness, Dan shared that he had been considering making another season of their popular sitcom before she died.

As for whether he sees a future for the Rose family now?

“No,” Dan, 42, said during an April 4 episode of CBS News Sunday Morning. “Not now. You can’t.”

Visiting the Ontario community where Schitt’s Creek was filmed was harder than he expected. “It’s tough being back,” he said, visibly emotional. “I didn’t realize it would affect me this much.”

Just remembering working with Catherine, who played Dan’s mother Moira Rose on the show, made him incredibly emotional.

He said he got emotional because he was remembering times he’d spent with Catherine.

He added, “It’s what you have to hold onto is the memories of it all”

He stressed that, along with a fantastic video compilation, it was remarkable how well she understood internet memes, especially considering she wasn’t a regular internet user.

After Catherine passed away, Dan spoke about the profound impact the Best in Show actress—who died at 71 from a blood clot in her lungs, brought on by rectal cancer—had had on his life.

He fondly remembered working with Catherine O’Hara, writing in an Instagram post on January 30th about how lucky he was to have shared so many years with her. He said he’ll always treasure the funny memories they made together.

Dan, one of the creators of Schitt’s Creek, also talked about his close relationship with the Levy family, explaining how much she meant to both him and his father, Eugene Levy, both professionally and personally.

I worked with Catherine alongside my dad for more than fifty years, so she felt like family long before she ever acted alongside my family on screen. It’s difficult to picture life without her.

It was a true joy to work alongside Catherine O’Hara for so many years – her talent was incredible. After spending over fifty years collaborating with my father, Catherine felt like family even before she played one on screen. It’s hard to imagine life without her. I’ll always treasure the funny moments we shared, and my heart goes out to her husband Bo, their sons Matthew and Luke, and the entire family.

This goes way back, even before the first Beetlejuice movie. She’s been like a wife in my imagination, a playful rival, and a genuinely wonderful friend in real life. I’m really heartbroken. I’m going to miss her terribly, and I’m also thinking of Beau right now.

Mom, I didn’t realize time was so short. I wished I could have spent more moments with you, just sitting beside you and talking. I had so much left to tell you, even though I said I loved you. I’ll see you again someday.

I’m truly at a loss for words. From the moment I met O’Hara, I thought she was one of the funniest people I’d ever seen. Home Alone actually inspired me to become a filmmaker, so working with her was a real honor. She was hilarious, incredibly kind, perceptive, and generous. She pushed me to make our show the best it could be, worthy of her talent. This is a heartbreaking loss, and we were all so fortunate to have her in our lives.

Catherine was an extraordinary person – kind, honest, intelligent, and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was strikingly beautiful, both inside and out, and possessed a remarkable spirit. Her work radiated her deep love for people, and she was uniquely treasured for her integrity, clear thinking, and wisdom. It’s easy to imagine her now with other great minds, sharing her incredible insights. Here on earth, we’re heartbroken by her loss, especially now when we needed her so much. Rest peacefully, dear friend.
