Science SARU, an animation studio founded in 2013, has gained a reputation for creating visually stunning anime with compelling stories. While their 2024 adaptation of the Shonen Jump+ series Dandadan has recently attracted international attention, Science SARU has a history of producing award-winning films and series. A particularly exciting upcoming project is the anime adaptation of Tomato Soup’s acclaimed manga, Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia. This series has been chosen to compete in the TV Films Competition at the Annecy Film Festival in 2026. Details about the story and a preview of the beautiful animation were shared in a recent promotional video.
The anime is set to debut in July 2026 as part of the summer season, though the specific release date is still to come. The production boasts a talented team of experienced creators. Naoko Yamada, known for directing the critically acclaimed film A Silent Voice, will oversee the series as general director, with Abel Gongora directing. Character designs will be handled by Kenichi Yoshida, who has a history with the famous Studio Ghibli.
What Is The Plot of Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia?
The story takes place in the 13th-century Mongol Empire, the largest empire in history, ruled by Genghis Khan. A young girl named Sitara is lost and alone, separated from her mother and forced to leave her home. Unable to care for herself, she ends up in a slave market until a kind family of scholars rescues her and gives her an education.
The Mongol Empire is constantly growing through invasion, impacting the lives of people everywhere. When their ambition turns to Sitara’s town, her quiet life is shattered, and her fate takes an unexpected turn.
Where Will Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia Be Streaming?

Currently, it’s unknown where you’ll be able to stream the anime; it will only air on TV Asahi and its partner stations in Japan for now. The anime will have a panel at AnimeJapan 2026, taking place March 28th and 29th at Tokyo Big Sight. Expect to learn more about where you can watch the series, including streaming options, at the convention.
The manga is published in Akita Shoten’s Souffle digital magazine, and currently has five volumes available in Japan. It will start being released again on March 25, 2026, just before the anime comes out. The manga, created by Tomato Soup, paused publication in October 2025, but briefly returned in February 2025 after a break for maternity leave.
