The second season of “Dandadan” is now on-air, with new episodes premiering every Thursday. This animated series continues its quirky storyline involving encounters with ghosts and aliens, as they attempt to retrieve the male protagonist’s missing body parts. The latest escapade involves Jiji, who has gained a powerful spirit of his own. Managing this new addition hasn’t been easy for the group, prompting Seiko Ayase to propose an exorcism to remove the malevolent “Evil Eye” spirit from Jiji. To carry out this plan, Seiko enlisted the help of a rock band called Hayashi, whose musicians may not be able to see spirits but can perform songs capable of driving away evil ones.
In the manga, the scene where the band plays to exorcise the spirit is brief, spanning just five pages. But in the anime, Studio Science Saru expands upon the original material in their unique way, as they have done with many elements. They use thematic colors – warm for spirits and cold for aliens – which adds depth to the story. In a recent special episode, the studio extends this scene into a four-minute sequence, where the Hayashi band plays an original rock song titled “Hunting Soul.” What’s more, to cater to different audiences, they include both Japanese and English versions of the song in the dubbed versions.

In the Japanese adaptation of the exorcism song, Kisho Taniyama from the famous band Granödeo took the lead role. Conversely, for the unexpected English version that’s left fans in the West astounded, vocals were supplied by Marc Hudson, the frontman of DragonForce. Recently, the creative twist in the anime series Dandadan has been highly praised online. This recent change showcases Science Saru’s meticulous approach to creating Dandadan, setting a high standard for what an exceptional anime should be. The manga by Yukinobu Tatsu is already a masterwork, seamlessly combining action, romance, comedy, and more, ensuring the series remains consistently engaging.
Science Saru has grasped the potential of the “Dandadan” manga and has consistently added fresh new elements to the anime, setting it apart. In the latest episode, the anime highlighted music, a genre not commonly featured in heavy action-comedy, making it a standout feature that fans will likely remember in the future. This is what makes watching “Dandadan” so enjoyable: its ability to incorporate unexpected elements that keep fans on their toes, solidifying it as one of the most innovative anime the current industry has produced.
