As an avid anime enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the latest episode of Dandadan has truly outdone itself. The creators have masterfully woven together high-intensity action sequences and hilarious comedic timing, making it a standout among this season’s offerings.
Dandadan has been nothing less than a stellar production since it premiered on Netflix and Crunchyroll in October 2024, quickly gaining favor amidst a crowded season of other remarkable series. The anime adaption of Yukinobu Tatsu’s original manga offers a blend that appeals to many: thrilling shonen action, a charming high school romance, touching emotional scenes, and flawless comedic delivery. Given the narrative’s focus on the supernatural, balancing intense moments with humor is crucial.
In episode 9 of the animated series Dandadan, titled “Merge! Serpo Dover Demon Nessie”, the outstanding storytelling skills of Science SARU are showcased as they skillfully amplify one of the manga’s most notable scenes. The episode depicts the moment when Okarun, Aira, and Momo defeat the Serpos, followed by Okarun and Momo resolving their differences concerning Aira. In a twist of fate, the trio are sent back to reality, but they find themselves in an embarrassing situation – having lost their clothes during the battle. Upon their return home, they are almost completely naked, which catches the attention of other students. Amused by the situation, Momo and Okarun flee, leaving Aira behind. She eventually joins them, completing their group once more.
In other shows, this scene might have been forgettable, serving only to conclude a joke. However, viewers couldn’t help but notice Aira’s peculiar running style. This moment sparked comparisons with a famous scene from the anime version of “Attack on Titan,” where a group of survivors freeze in fear as a Titan smashes into the square, running in an unexpectedly non-threatening manner.
The Iconic Running Titan Has a Way Of Making It Into (Almost) Every Major Anime
The character Titan gained popularity in “Attack on Titan” due to his unusual tone when he was first introduced. However, it’s not just “Dandadan” that has this unique similarity noticed by fans; other anime series have also exhibited this parallel. When the anime “Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead” premiered in July 2023, viewers spotted a striking resemblance in the first episode between Akira’s zombified boss and Saori’s hurried running style and the Titan’s iconic run. Interestingly, the viral “run cycle” meme from “Attack on Titan” wasn’t its original source; seasoned or astute anime fans have pointed out that this type of running is commonly associated with the classic trope of an anime girl rushing to school.
The trope was a staple in shoujo manga for decades before it started worming its way into other demographics. While the Titan and Aira’s version of the run don’t feature the “toast of tardiness,” their frantic arm movements certainly deliver the same energy seen in more traditional takes on the trope like K-On!, Sailor Moon, and even Evangelion.
