The new production, with Daniel Radcliffe in the lead role, has been well-received by critics according to Rotten Tomatoes. Maria Friedman directs this version of the Stephen Sondheim and George Furth musical, which also features performances by Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez.
With the release of the movie Merrily We Roll Along, it’s already receiving positive reviews! Rotten Tomatoes currently shows a 95% approval rating based on 20 reviews, and it’s officially labeled “fresh.” While an audience score isn’t available yet, it should appear soon as more people see the film.
Merrily We Roll Along is a film capturing the acclaimed Tony Award-winning musical. It tells the story of composer Franklin Shepard and his complex, decades-long friendship with writer Mary and playwright Charley. The stage production, which ran from October 2023 to July 2024, won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe also received Tony Awards for their performances in the show.
I’m really excited to see Daniel Radcliffe in Merrily We Roll Along – it’s his first movie since 2022 when we got Weird: The Al Yankovic Story and The Lost City! Of course, I still think of him as Harry Potter, but it’s been amazing watching his career after the Harry Potter films ended in 2011. He’s done such a variety of things – comedies, action movies, even horror – he really isn’t afraid to try anything!
After appearing in this new musical, Daniel Radcliffe doesn’t currently have any films planned. His next confirmed project is a TV series titled The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, a comedy show featuring Tracy Morgan.
It’s still unclear what Daniel Radcliffe will do next in his acting career, but he definitely won’t be returning to play Harry Potter in the foreseeable future. He’s made it clear he wants to move on from the series, and the upcoming Harry Potter TV show will feature a new actor, Dominic McLaughlin, taking on the role.
While “Merrily We Roll Along” features some of Sondheim’s most beloved songs, it’s uncertain how well the movie will do in theaters. Films based on stage musicals often appeal to a smaller, dedicated audience. However, the excellent reviews on Rotten Tomatoes suggest that those who see it will really enjoy the experience.
