DanMachi Producer Noburhiro Osawa Teases the Anime’s Future & How It’s Changed Over 10 Years

This year, the popular anime series “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” returned with a new season, and we had the opportunity to interview the producer about the show’s future and its journey over the past decade. Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the original anime debut, the series has recently concluded its much-anticipated fifth season.

In honor of the 10th anniversary of the popular anime “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” (DanMachi), ComicBook had an exclusive interview with producer Nobuhiro Osawa, discussing the show’s journey so far. Osawa shared his plans for extending the anime beyond its fifth season and the obstacles that have arisen along the way. Furthermore, he reflected on the transformations the franchise has undergone throughout its decade-long run.

How DanMachi Was Turned Into An Anime

Speaking as a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on our approach to transforming “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” into an anime series. When asked about this exciting project, I proudly declared that it was a commitment we were eager to see through till the end. You see, when we embark on a journey with an original work, like DanMachi or Sword Art Online, Mushoku Tensei among others, we always vow to stick with it until the original story concludes. It’s this same dedication and passion that drives our approach for each of these series.

Initially diving into DanMachi, Osawa shared the reason behind the team’s decision to adapt Fujino Omori’s original light novels: “We launched the first season when there were only two books available. What immediately captivated me was Bell’s allure. His character and the intricately developed worldview drew me in deeply. The instant I read it, I felt, ‘We have to bring this to life.’ From this story, I realized that the essence of it lies within the characters. To truly understand them, one must look beyond the surface and delve into their deeper aspects. This will not only sustain the series but also serve as a recurring theme throughout.

In the anime adaptation of “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?”, the production team encountered significant difficulties during Season 4 due to the sheer size of the source material. Specifically, as Osawa explained, adapting the events from volumes 12, 13, and 14 of the light novel was particularly challenging because, despite there only being three volumes, some of these volumes contained twice as much content as usual. This meant that it took twice the effort to bring the story to life on screen.

How DanMachi Has Changed Over the Years

Osawa shared that due to the need for more content, they had to extend the episodes for Season 4, which turned out to be quite a challenge. Originally, they were producing one season per three volumes, but this time around, they increased it to 22 episodes. Additionally, he mentioned a particularly impactful scene from Season 1, Episode 8, where Bell makes a significant decision to become an Argonaut, marking his path as a hero.

Over the past ten years, the anime genre has experienced significant transformations in various aspects. The artistic style, incorporation of 3D technology, direction, and cinematography have all seen substantial evolution. Moreover, there’s a new director now who emphasizes more on action sequences compared to their predecessor, marking a distinct change in the genre.

It’s unclear if “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” will continue past Season 5, as the light novels are currently in the final story arc. Producer Osawa expressed his desire to keep the series going as long as there is more content available. However, since the anime has reached the same point as the original source material, it ultimately depends on author Fuijino Omori’s writing speed for the production of new seasons.

Excitedly speaking here, fellow anime enthusiasts! I’m thrilled to share that you can now dive into the captivating world of “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon” like never before!
