Danny Boyle Teases Cillian Murphy’s Return in ’28 Years Later’ Sequel

It’s been 24 years since Cillian Murphy first played Jim, the bicycle courier who woke from a coma to find Britain devastated by a man-made virus called Rage. Now, director Danny Boyle is discussing Murphy’s return in the new sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The film centers on Spike (Alfie Williams), who has lived his whole life on the isolated island of Lindisfarne, until he meets the compelling cult leader Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell). Apparently, the movie ends with a welcome return appearance by Jim.

When Deadline asked about working with the Oscar-winning actor again on the film, producer Boyle responded:

Let me tell you, stick around for the credits! Seriously, don’t leave early – there’s a genuinely special moment at the very end, and I’m not going to spoil it for you. It’s worth the price of admission just for that, honestly. If you enjoy this film, the ending of the second one will suddenly click – you’ll get a little preview of where the story is heading, and it’s a really satisfying feeling. It’s funny, because most horror movies leave you shaken, but this one ends on a surprisingly delightful note. And trust me, it leaves you desperately wanting more – a perfect setup for the next installment.

Where Did We Leave Jim in ’28 Days Later’?

Sony Pictures Releasing

At the end of 28 Days Later, Jim, Selena, and Hannah managed to escape Major West and his soldiers. They found refuge in a rural cottage and appeared to signal an RAF jet searching for survivors. Now, with The Bone Temple, it’s unclear how Jim will reappear. Will he, Selena, and Hannah have gone their separate ways? Or did Murphy’s character retreat into the wilderness, only to unexpectedly encounter Spike when things get difficult?

Nia DaCosta, the director of The Bone Temple, described working with Danny Murphy as “surreal,” explaining that she’s admired his work on 28 Days Later for years.

It’s completely unreal. I grew up watching this actor in a film I really loved, and now I’m actually directing him! He’s asking for my feedback on a scene, and he just won an Academy Award? It’s all so bizarre and unbelievable.

I was completely blown away by 28 Days Later. I rewatched it countless times, and I became totally immersed in the film’s world and characters. I even had a huge crush on Cillian Murphy and really admired Naomie Harris’s character.

Jim will return for the third and final film in Alex Garland’s 28 Years Later series. After strong positive reactions to The Bone Temple last month, Sony Pictures has approved a sequel to conclude the story. Garland is writing the script again, and filming is expected to begin later this year.
