Daredevil Born Again Finally Rectifies A Major Netflix-Era Mistake In Season 2

The new Daredevil: Born Again series is already building connections to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe in ways the old Netflix shows couldn’t. Because the original Netflix series were made separately from Marvel Studios, their ties to the MCU were minimal, and it wasn’t always clear if those shows were officially part of the main Marvel storyline. However, it’s now confirmed that the “Defenders Saga” shows are part of the MCU’s history, and this new series is continuing that story years later.

As a huge Daredevil fan, I was so excited to see Avengers Tower—you might remember it as Stark Tower—in the first episode of Daredevil: Born Again! It was a quick shot of New York City at night, but it was a really cool nod to the wider Marvel universe. It’s great they finally included it, because honestly, it always felt a little off that it was missing from the skyline in the older Daredevil series and the other Defenders shows. It feels much more connected now!

Following the sale of Avengers Tower in the movie Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), nobody knew who bought it. Many fans speculated, including theories that Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, was the new owner of the famous New York building.

Last year, Thunderbolts revealed that Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, now owns the building and has renamed it the Watchtower. It serves as the headquarters for O.X.E., her secret operations company.

The recent appearance of Avengers Tower in Daredevil: Born Again corrects an oversight in the previous Netflix Marvel series. Earlier shows, like The Punisher, strangely left the iconic building out of the New York City skyline.

The Stark Tower-like building seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t actually located in New York City; it was created using computer-generated imagery for the films. The Netflix series likely didn’t include it because adding those visual effects would have been too expensive given their smaller budgets.

Although Avengers Tower wasn’t shown in the background of the Netflix series, the shows still clearly took place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and weren’t trying to hide that connection.

Even back in 2015, when the first motion poster for Daredevil was released, Avengers Tower was visible in the background. Back then, the New York skyscraper still served as headquarters for the Avengers, falling between the releases of the first two Avengers movies.

Despite being sold off in the 2017 film Spider-Man: Homecoming, the tower reappeared in promotional material for Season 3 of Daredevil. This was particularly notable since Daredevil’s final season aired in October 2018, a year after the sale.

The Defenders series generally avoided specific connections to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. They’d refer to events like the Battle of New York from The Avengers simply as “the Incident,” and mention superheroes by name without ever having them actually appear.

Following the events of Thunderbolts, the Watchtower is now used as the headquarters for the New Avengers and will appear in Avengers: Doomsday. However, the iconic Marvel location might be changing its recent updated look.

We don’t know yet if the second season of Daredevil: Born Again will happen before or after the Thunderbolts* movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This makes it uncertain if the New Avengers have established their base at the Watchtower.

New episodes of Born Again will be released every Tuesday for the next few weeks. Fans are hoping the show continues to include references to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and potentially establish connections to the Thunderbolts storyline, possibly relating to the mysterious Void that appeared in New York.

Are More MCU Connections Coming in Daredevil: Born Again?

The links to the Thunderbolts don’t stop there in the second episode of Daredevil: Born Again. Matthew Lillard’s character, Mr. Charles, is now connected to Valentina, likely because they both work for the CIA.

With the upgraded Watchtower now appearing in Born Again, fans are speculating about Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s potential involvement in future Marvel projects. This idea is supported by Daredevil: Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane, who hinted he has a storyline in mind that could feature actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

The Disney+ series Born Again hasn’t connected much with the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is why we haven’t seen any Avengers appear. It’s likely this will continue throughout the Daredevil revival. The show aims to keep a realistic, gritty feel, and introducing too many superheroes could undermine that.

I was reading about the upcoming Born Again series, and it sounds like the characters might pop up in other Marvel projects too, almost like little cameos. The producer mentioned something about Jon Bernthal’s Punisher showing up in a Spider-Man movie before, and that could happen again. A lot of fans are bummed that Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin aren’t part of Born Again right away, but honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see them in a future Spider-Man film. It feels like Marvel’s keeping options open, which is exciting!
