Because Jon Bernthal’s Punisher was imprisoned by Wilson Fisk at the end of Born Again Season 1, fans expected him to appear in Season 2. This expectation was heightened by the fact that Bernthal is also starring in a separate streaming special planned to release after the eight episodes of Born Again Season 2 are finished.
The second season of Daredevil: Born Again is part of a recent effort by Marvel Studios to bring back popular shows from its Netflix days. This mature-themed series features a battle between Daredevil and Wilson Fisk, who is now the Mayor of New York City, amidst the city’s tough and dirty streets. To defeat Fisk, Daredevil, played by Charlie Cox, needs to gather a team of heroes to defend their city.

Punisher’s MCU Future Explained
It’s especially strange that Jon Bernthal isn’t listed in the cast for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, considering Marvel Studios has already confirmed his character will play a significant role in other projects planned for 2026, separate from the streaming series.
Jon Bernthal is returning as the Punisher in a new special coming to Disney+ this summer. The story will follow the Punisher as he deals with a new female crime boss who has ties to his history.
Details about when the Punisher special will be released haven’t been announced yet. However, it’s expected to become available after Season 2 of Born Again, but before Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Tom Holland’s next Spider-Man movie, coming to theaters July 31st, will also feature Jon Bernthal’s character from the Marvel universe. Reports suggest he’ll have a significant role, including a large-scale action scene where he appears to battle an enraged Hulk.
Fans are puzzled by the lack of Punisher in announced plans for 2026, considering his busy schedule. At the end of the first season, he was imprisoned, meaning the show will likely need to explain his release in Season 2 so he can appear in both the Punisher series and a Spider-Man project.
