Daredevil: Born Again’s Kingpin Story Means the MCU’s Best Missing Character Should Finally Return

The second season of Daredevil: Born Again quickly shows how much Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) has changed New York City. Six months after the first season ended, the city is still under martial law, and Fisk’s task force against vigilantes is now a regular part of everyday life. Because crime is down and the mayor is popular, most people believe the problems caused by vigilantes are worse than any good they might do. This situation puts Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) in a tough spot, as they secretly fight against a government that most New Yorkers don’t want to challenge. Fisk is also strengthening his power by putting a vigilante on public trial.

The first episode of Daredevil: Born Again shows that Jack Duquesne, also known as Swordsman, is at the center of a very public trial. This trial isn’t about finding the truth, but about Kingpin, Fisk, convincing the city that all masked vigilantes are dangerous. Fisk is carefully controlling the situation – he’s even put Matt Murdock’s ex-girlfriend, Heather Glenn, in charge of mental health evaluations and is using her to portray Duquesne as a violent psychopath. The trial is clearly designed to support Fisk’s version of events, but this storyline also creates an opportunity to bring back a popular character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Kate Bishop Should Be Part of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2

The ongoing Daredevil: Born Again storyline strongly suggests Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) needs to return to make the story work. She’s established as living and operating as a hero in New York City, which is now under a crackdown on vigilantes led by Wilson Fisk. This puts her directly in conflict with Fisk’s new policies and gives her a clear reason to fight back against his control of the city. Kate has always been one to follow her own instincts, even when it means disobeying the law or advice from figures like Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner). Given her character, it would be out of character for her to simply stand by while Fisk takes over.

At the end of Hawkeye, Kate Bishop directly fought Kingpin to protect her mother, but she didn’t defeat him. He not only survived but later became mayor of New York City, the very place Kate lives. Because of this, she sees him as a dangerous criminal who threatened her family and got away with it. It doesn’t make sense that she would simply stand by and watch him gain power and then target other heroes, considering how determined and proactive she was when we first met her in the MCU.

Kate Bishop’s journey in the Swordsman trial adds to her tendency to question authority. In Hawkeye, Jack Duquesne was presented as her mother Eleanor’s fiancé, and though Kate first thought he was involved in crime, the show revealed Eleanor was actually using him. Duquesne clearly has a complex past with Kate and is someone she’s naturally drawn to investigate. Seeing him used in Fisk’s campaign against vigilantes is exactly the kind of unfairness that would push her to take action.

As a critic, I’m really hoping to see Kate Bishop return in Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, and it’s not just wishful thinking. Frankly, Marvel hasn’t given her a lot to do since Hawkeye wrapped up. Her only live-action appearance was a quick cameo in The Marvels, teasing a Young Avengers team that’s gone nowhere. Everything else has been in animated projects – a version of her in What If…? set in the Old West, and Marvel Zombies in a completely different reality. While those were fun, they didn’t really move her story forward in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. Considering how Daredevil: Born Again ties into Kate’s existing history, leaving her out would feel like a real missed opportunity. It’s time to see what happens with her next!

New episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are now available on Disney+ every Tuesday.
