Dark Manga Series Ends As Anime Future Remains a Mystery

Lately, several popular manga series published in Weekly Shonen Jump have finished their runs. However, Shueisha isn’t the only publisher ending long-running stories. Mag Garden, another significant manga publisher, has also seen some of its biggest titles conclude. Series like The Ancient Magus’ Bride, Danganronpa The Manga, The Great Pretender, and Psycho-Pass have all recently finished, and another major series is ending this week.

The dark fantasy anime series, Kingdoms of Ruin, began as a written story by Yoruhashi with Mag Garden in 2019. After fourteen volumes, the story has reached its conclusion in Japan with its sixty-fifth chapter, finally finishing Adonis’s quest for revenge. While we won’t spoil anything, the ending is as positive as fans could have expected. However, it doesn’t appear there are any plans for a new anime season. You can read the final chapter here, but you may need a translation to fully understand the story’s conclusion.

Kingdoms of Ruin’s Anime Future

The anime series, which began in 2023, came out several years after the original manga. With twelve episodes available on Crunchyroll, it quickly gained popularity due to its dark and complex themes. The story follows Adonis, who gains supernatural powers through witchcraft, and his quest for revenge after his teacher, Chloe, is killed. Though he finds help along the way, avenging Chloe proves to be a difficult journey.

Yokohama Animation Lab is a newer anime studio, founded in 2015. While known for adapting Kingdoms of Ruin, they’ve also created several other popular series, including Legend of Mana: The Teardrop Crystal, The Witch And The Beast, and Monster Strike. Currently, Yokohama hasn’t announced any plans for a second season of Kingdoms of Ruin, but there’s still a lot of source material available if the show is renewed.

In the world of Kingdoms of Ruin, magic once helped humanity thrive, gifted by powerful witches. But now, a new age of science and technology, called the Gear Expansion, has made magic – and witches – seem outdated. The Redia Empire believes magic is a curse and has begun a brutal campaign to eliminate all witches. Adonis, a young apprentice to a witch he loved deeply, witnesses her death at the hands of the Empire and dedicates his life to revenge. This sets the stage for a massive conflict between the forces of science and magic.
