Netflix is having a good problem: two new shows are performing really well this week. Surprisingly, a brand new, dark drama series quickly rose to the top spot, even beating out the return of a critically acclaimed show from last year. The two shows are quite different in style and mood.
FlixPatrol’s latest chart of the top 10 shows on Netflix features two new entries. Season 2 of the popular series Nobody Wants This arrived with 618 views, but it was quickly overshadowed by The Monster of Florence. The new series unexpectedly jumped to the number one spot with 827 views.
The contrast between these two shows is striking. “Nobody Wants This” is a well-received romantic comedy that audiences loved in its first season. In comparison, “The Monster of Florence” is a serious, in-depth look at the real-life serial killer known as Il Mostro – Italian for ‘the monster.’ Between 1968 and 1985, Il Mostro murdered 16 people in Florence, Italy, and remarkably, the case remains unsolved to this day.
Stefano Sollima, the director of the Netflix series, shared in an interview with THR Roma (as reported by People) that the production team prioritized accuracy. They built the series around real accounts and official case files, meticulously recreating crime scenes – down to the smallest detail, like the position of objects and vehicles, and even the shooter’s location. Sollima also noted that their reconstruction sometimes uncovered discrepancies with the established official narratives.
According to Sollima, their primary goal was to accurately recreate the historical context. They aimed to present a complete and honest picture, rebuilding not just the country itself, but also its culture, societal norms, and the underlying flaws that complicated the investigation.
Viewers seem to appreciate how realistic the miniseries The Monster of Florence feels, but there aren’t many reviews available on Rotten Tomatoes yet. Currently, it has a 60% score based on 10 reviews, and audience ratings are still being collected. Meanwhile, season 2 of Nobody Wants This has a 79% rating from critics and a 74% audience score. While these numbers are slightly lower than season 1’s 95% critic score and 85% audience score, the show is still generally popular.
